Yes. No rule stops you from leaving Indonesia and re-entering on a new visa, but re-entry is never guaranteed: immigration officers at the airport can refuse foreigners under Article 13 of Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration. This information was checked on 31 October 2026.
A visa run, a quick flight to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur and back, is common among long-stay visitors, including Russians who enter on a visa on arrival (VoA). These are the mistakes that most often wreck the plan.
1. Thinking the VoA can be extended forever
The VoA is valid for 30 days and can be extended once for another 30, so 60 days at most (the steps are in our Bali e-VoA 2026 article). After that you must leave. Visa-free entry for certain nationalities is also 30 days and cannot be extended at all.
2. Assuming a new VoA is automatic
An old VoA cannot be reused. When you come back you apply for fresh entry, and the officer at Ngurah Rai assesses you from scratch. Article 13 allows refusal if, for example, your name is on the entry ban list, your documents are faulty, or you give false information. People who are refused are usually put on the next flight out, and the visa fee is not refunded.
3. Not being ready for "why are you back in Bali?"
Your entries and exits are recorded digitally. A passport showing 60 days in Bali, three days in Singapore, then back again several times will understandably prompt questions about your purpose, where you are staying and how you support yourself. Have an onward ticket, proof of accommodation and proof of funds ready before you fly back.
4. Working while "on holiday"
This is the most common reason for deportation. On 16 October 2026, the Buleleng Class II Immigration Office deported a 46-year-old Czech woman who had entered on a VoA and then marketed villas in Abang district, Karangasem, on Facebook, CNN Indonesia reported (24 October 2026). The office head, Anak Agung Gde Kusuma Putra, stressed that every foreigner must use a visa and stay permit that match the purpose of their visit. A visa run changes none of that: regular remote work, paid endorsements and paid services remain off-limits on a visit visa (details in remote work on a tourist visa).
5. Booking the exit flight too close to the deadline
If your visa-run flight is delayed and you pass the end of your permit, the overstay fine of Rp1,000,000 per day applies, and overstaying more than 60 days leads to deportation and an entry ban. The maths and payment process are in our Bali overstay fine article. Leave at least two days of margin.
6. Forgetting about tax
Spending more than 183 days in Indonesia within 12 months can make you an Indonesian tax resident, whatever your visa. Repeated visa runs across a year can pass that mark without you noticing.
What you must repeat every time you re-enter
- A new VoA or e-VoA, Rp500,000 each time.
- The All Indonesia arrival card, filled in again for each arrival.
- The Rp150,000 foreign tourist levy via Love Bali, because it applies per arrival.
- A passport with at least 6 months' validity left and blank pages for stamps.
So one visa run costs more than the flight. Add the visa fee, the levy and a night or two in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur before you decide.
Safer options than back-to-back visa runs
- C1 tourist visit visa: an initial 60-day stay, extendable up to 180 days in total without leaving the country. The official Directorate General of Immigration page lists Rp1,000,000 for the 60-day visa.
- D1 multiple-entry visit visa: for people who genuinely travel in and out often. The Immigration page lists Rp4,000,000 for one-year validity, with stays of up to 60 days per arrival according to reports at its launch.
- E33G digital nomad visa, if you work for a company outside Indonesia.
Fees can change, so double-check on evisa.imigrasi.go.id before applying. Your other obligations in Bali, including the Rp150,000 tourist levy, are collected on the Bali rules page.
FAQ
How many visa runs are allowed per year?
Immigration has not published a number. The decision rests with the officer when you arrive, so the tighter your in-and-out pattern, the more likely you are to face further questions.
Do I have to go to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur?
There is no rule on the destination. Those two are popular because flights from Ngurah Rai are frequent and short.
Will a visa run get me blacklisted?
A visa run alone is not grounds for an entry ban. Bans usually follow long overstays, unauthorised work or other violations that end in deportation.
