Budget Stays in Bali 2026: Homestay, Guesthouse, Hostel or 2–3-Star Hotel? Price Ranges by Area & When a Hotel Voucher Pays Off

Bali can still be enjoyed on a tight budget — the trick is picking the right type of stay. A Rp250,000 homestay room in Amed and a Rp900,000 three-star room in Canggu are both "budget" for different travellers. This guide compares the four main options, their price ranges by area, and when a hotel actually works out better.

Homestay, guesthouse, hostel or 2–3-star hotel?

  • Homestay — a room inside a Balinese family compound, often with a simple breakfast such as banana pancakes or pisang goreng (fried banana) plus tea or coffee. Strong local feel, basic facilities, moderate privacy. Good for travellers who want to be close to local culture and don't need 24-hour service.
  • Guesthouse — a small property with private rooms, sometimes a small pool, and limited reception hours. Suits couples who want privacy for less than a hotel.
  • Hostel — dorm beds plus some private rooms, lockers, shared spaces and social events. Cheapest for solo travellers; privacy is low, and some hostels set age limits (for example 18–35 or 18–40).
  • 2–3-star hotel — air conditioning, hot water, 24-hour reception, often a pool and breakfast; prices are usually shown "++" (before tax and service). Best for families or anyone who wants predictable standards.

Nightly price ranges by area (2025–2026)

These ranges come from OTA listings (Hostelworld and Booking.com) and can rise in peak season, such as July–August and year-end. Order: hostel dorm / homestay or guesthouse room / budget hotel.

How to choose: cheap but safe

  • Check the date of the latest reviews, not just the rating. Reviews from the past few weeks show the place is open and its condition is current.
  • Weigh location against traffic. The Canggu–Seminyak route and central Ubud jam up in the afternoon; staying near your main activities saves on transport.
  • Ask about hot water, AC and lockers. Cheap homestays and hostels don't always have hot water or AC; bring your own padlock for dorm lockers.
  • Make sure it's licensed. Indonesia's Tourism Ministry required accommodation to obtain a licence through OSS by 31 May 2026; as of 4 May 2026 only 31,233 of about 470,000 alternative-accommodation listings on 9 OTAs had been verified, and unlicensed ones are to be delisted. In February 2026 Bali's governor also asked Airbnb to remove illegal accommodation. Choose places with a clear business name that can issue an official receipt.
  • Compare final prices. Licensed hotels charge 10% PBJT regional tax (UU No. 1 Tahun 2022) plus a service charge of around 10–11%, so "++" adds roughly 21% to the base rate. Details are in Hidden Hotel Costs in Bali 2026.

When is a hotel voucher better value than the cheapest homestay?

  • Travelling as three or as a family: one three-star hotel room can cost less than several dorm beds or two homestay rooms.
  • You want breakfast and a pool: if the homestay has no full breakfast, eating out every morning adds to your daily budget.
  • Long stays: for 5 nights or more, AC, hot water, housekeeping and 24-hour reception reduce the risk of having to move mid-trip.
  • Peak season: cheap homestay rates rise too, so the gap to a three-star hotel can narrow — compare the final price of both.
