No. Medicare does not pay for doctors, hospitals or evacuation in Bali, because Indonesia is not one of the 11 countries with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia. Australian private health insurance (hospital and extras) generally does not cover treatment overseas either, so travel insurance is the only thing standing between you and the bill.
What does the Australian Government say?
Smartraveller's Indonesia page (updated 21 October 2026, checked via an archived copy on 1 November 2026) states that there is no agreement between Australia and Indonesia for free healthcare. Tourists must pay for all treatment, including hospital stays and evacuation, and the Australian Government will not pay these costs. It also says that if you can't afford travel insurance, you shouldn't travel.
Which countries have an RHCA?
According to Smartraveller's reciprocal health care page (updated 5 February 2026), Australia has agreements with Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Republic of Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Services Australia also puts the number at 11. Indonesia is not on the list. Even in RHCA countries, the agreements only cover urgent care in the public system, often with a co-payment, and never evacuation.
What about private health insurance?
Australian private health policies are built for treatment in Australia. TUH Health's FAQ (checked 1 November 2026) puts it plainly: private health insurance does not cover medical, hospital or extras treatment received while travelling overseas. Some funds sell separate travel insurance, but that is a different product from your hospital/extras cover. If your policy documents don't mention "travel", assume they don't apply in Bali.
How much will you pay in Bali?
Private clinics and hospitals in Bali bill the patient directly, usually before or right after treatment. Some figures you can check yourself:
- bali.live's guide to Canggu hospitals (undated, opened 1 November 2026) lists a GP consultation at IDR 800,000 at one hospital, a clinic consultation at IDR 350,000, a villa home visit at IDR 850,000, and a consultation at Asta Medical Centre for IDR 250,000.
- Trishnanda Care Centre (June 2025 article) lists a hotel doctor visit at IDR 550,000 and estimates private clinic consultations at IDR 450,000-700,000.
- Emergency, inpatient and ICU fees are far higher; we compare hospitals in our article on doctor and ER costs in Bali without insurance.
Smartraveller warns that without insurance you might have to pay thousands of dollars up front. For serious cases, hospitals generally want confirmation of insurance, a deposit and a written payment guarantee from family or friends before they treat you.
Can you claim Medicare once you're home?
Not for Bali bills. Indonesian hospital receipts can't be lodged with Medicare. What is still covered is follow-up care once you are back in Australia: Smartraveller notes that if you can't afford treatment overseas, you can return home and seek subsidised treatment under Medicare or your private insurer. The catch is that flying home seriously ill often needs a medical evacuation, which Medicare doesn't cover either. Typical costs are in our Bali-to-Australia medical evacuation article.
Already in Bali, uninsured and unwell?
- Ask for a written cost estimate before any procedure, and whether outpatient treatment is an option.
- For minor problems, a small clinic or community health centre (puskesmas) costs far less than a private hospital ER; the cost article linked above compares them.
- Keep every receipt, prescription and medical report in English. You will need them if you later claim through credit card travel cover.
What to check in your travel insurance policy
- Unlimited or very high limits for medical costs and evacuation, since that is the biggest financial risk.
- Pre-existing conditions declared when you buy; many insurers decline undeclared claims.
- Activities: riding a scooter (and whether you need an Australian motorcycle licence), diving or volcano treks often need an add-on.
- The insurer's 24-hour emergency number saved in your phone, so the hospital can request a payment guarantee straight away.
The full checklist is in our article on whether you need travel insurance for Bali, and other rules visitors ask about are on the Bali rules page.
FAQ
Can I use my Medicare card at a Bali hospital?
No. Bali hospitals don't bill Medicare; you pay by cash, card or through your travel insurer's guarantee.
Does my credit card give me travel insurance automatically?
Some cards include complimentary cover under conditions, such as buying the flights on that card. Read the terms and the medical limit before relying on it.
Will the Australian Consulate in Bali pay my bill?
No. Smartraveller says the Australian Government can't pay your bill or lend you money. The cost stays with you or your travel insurer.
