Without insurance, a GP consultation at a private tourist clinic in Bali starts at around IDR 250k, a single visit to a private hospital emergency department usually runs USD 100-300, and an inpatient night costs USD 70-500 depending on the hospital. The figures below come from clinic price lists and cost guides published in 2026 (checked October 2026). Every hospital sets its own rates, so always ask for a written estimate before treatment.
How much is a GP visit at a clinic?
The price list of Dewa Medical, a clinic and mobile doctor service in Bali (February 2026), shows a doctor consultation at IDR 250k and a hotel or villa visit fee from IDR 450k. An IV drip for dehydration is IDR 1.8 million, and a Bali belly package with IV is IDR 2.45 million. A GP consultation at a private hospital costs more: the insurance-indonesia.com cost guide (updated January 2026) estimates USD 40-100 at BIMC, USD 30-80 at Siloam and USD 20-50 at Kasih Ibu Hospital.
Can tourists use a puskesmas (public health centre)?
Yes, and it is far cheaper. In Denpasar, City Regulation No. 5 of 2023 (in force since 1 February 2024) sets the general patient outpatient fee at IDR 25k, wound care at IDR 16k, 1-4 stitches at IDR 39k and a full blood count at IDR 71k. The regulation does not mention a separate rate for foreigners, so ask at the counter. The catch: limited opening hours, long morning queues of local patients, and not every staff member speaks fluent English. For a minor wound or a simple fever, a puskesmas makes sense; for a serious injury, go straight to a hospital emergency department.
How much does the emergency department cost?
Estimates from insurance-indonesia.com (January 2026) for one ER visit:
- BIMC Hospital (Kuta, Nusa Dua): USD 150-300
- Siloam Hospitals (Denpasar): USD 100-250
- Bali International Hospital (Sanur, opened June 2025): USD 100-200
- Kasih Ibu Hospital: USD 80-150
- RSUP Prof. Ngoerah (formerly Sanglah), the government hospital: USD 30-100
Those are for simple cases. A Your Happiness Tours guide (April 2026) puts an ER visit with IV and 4-8 hours of observation at USD 300-600, a single X-ray at USD 60-120 and a CT scan at USD 250-500. RSUP Prof. Ngoerah runs a 24-hour ER, the Wing Amerta executive outpatient clinic (Monday-Saturday 8am-8pm) and an international patient service.
How much is a night in hospital?
For a standard room, the same guide estimates USD 300-500 a night at BIMC, USD 120-300 at Siloam, USD 70-150 at Kasih Ibu and USD 30-80 at RSUP Prof. Ngoerah. ICU is far higher: USD 1,000-2,500 a night at private hospitals. These rates exclude medicines, specialist visits and lab tests. A real example: in August 2026 the NZ Herald reported on an Australian tourist injured in a scooter crash in Bali whose medical bills had passed AUD 30,000 and were still rising.
What do medicines and vaccines cost?
Pharmacy medicine for diarrhoea or a mild fever is usually cheap, but some emergency drugs are expensive. Dewa Medical (February 2026) lists rabies vaccine at IDR 1.3 million per dose and rabies immunoglobulin at IDR 10-15 million. If a dog or monkey bites you, the steps are in our rabies guide. Ask for a written prescription and keep pharmacy receipts; you will need both for a claim.
How much is a medical evacuation?
This is the item that most often sends families to crowdfunding. 2026 estimates: an air ambulance from Bali to Singapore at USD 50,000-100,000, a commercial flight with stretcher and medical escort at USD 20,000-40,000 (insurance-indonesia.com), and an air ambulance to Australia at USD 80,000-150,000 (Your Happiness Tours). Indonesia's national health scheme, BPJS Kesehatan, does not cover tourists.
Can the ER ask for a deposit?
Not in a genuine emergency. Article 174(2) of Indonesia's Health Law No. 17 of 2023 bars health facilities from refusing patients or asking for a down payment in an emergency, or putting paperwork ahead of treatment. Once you are stable, or for a non-emergency admission, private hospitals usually ask for a cash deposit, a credit card pre-authorisation or a guarantee of payment from your insurer. The insurance-indonesia.com guide puts typical deposits at USD 500-5,000, and much more for serious cases.
How do you make the bill claimable?
- Ask for an itemised bill rather than a single total. Many policies reject lump-sum receipts.
- Ask for a medical report listing the diagnosis, procedures and doctor's name, in English if possible.
- Keep the paid receipt, prescriptions, lab results and scans.
- For a road accident, get a police report; some insurers require it.
- Pay by credit card where possible so there is a transaction record.
- Call your insurer's emergency line before an inpatient admission; many policies require approval first.
Hospitals, 24-hour clinics and key phone numbers are listed in our Bali emergency health guide 2026, and what to check in a policy is covered in our article on travel insurance for Bali. One simple habit before you fly: photograph your passport and insurance card and keep copies on your phone and in your email, so you can show them at any ER.
