If an Indonesian airline cancels your flight because of volcanic ash, you are entitled to choose between rerouting on another flight or a full refund of the ticket price, but the airline does not have to pay cash compensation, because disruption outside its control is exempted under Transport Ministry Regulation PM 89 of 2015. Foreign airlines follow their own conditions of carriage, and the cost of extra hotel nights usually falls on your travel insurance, not the airline. The rules and policies below were checked in September 2026.
How often does this happen?
Often enough to plan for. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores, about 500 km east of Bali, has caused repeated cancellations: November 2024 (Jetstar, Virgin Australia, and AirAsia cancelled, Qantas was disrupted), June 2025 (Jetstar and Virgin Australia cancelled Australia-Bali services), and 7 July 2025 when the ash column reached about 18 km (Al Jazeera, ABC). This month, on 5-7 September 2026, the Anak Krakatau eruption disrupted 520 flights at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta Airport (detik), which also hit passengers connecting through Jakarta. In 2017 the Mount Agung eruption closed Ngurah Rai Airport itself.
Are you owed cash compensation?
For Indonesian scheduled airlines (Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Group, Indonesia AirAsia, and others), PM 89/2015 sorts delays into 6 categories and requires Rp300,000 compensation for delays over 4 hours. But airlines are exempt from compensation when the cause is weather or technical operational factors beyond their control, and volcanic ash is generally treated that way. What stays yours when a flight is actually cancelled: rerouting on the next flight or a full refund. Request the refund through the airline's app or counter rather than a third-party agent where you can, since agents often add processing time.
What about Jetstar, Virgin Australia, and Qantas?
Foreign airlines follow their conditions of carriage and home-country rules, not PM 89. When Lewotobi erupted in November 2024, Jetstar gave passengers booked on 13-17 November the option to postpone travel by up to three weeks or take a travel credit (ABC), and Qantas said affected customers would be contacted directly with their options. If you are only offered credit and want your money back, make the request in writing and cite the airline's conditions of carriage. On hotels and meals while stranded, read those conditions too; many airlines do not cover accommodation when the cause is outside their control.
Does travel insurance pay?
Usually yes, with one big condition: the policy must be bought before the eruption became a "known event", meaning it had been reported in the media or on official government sites. CHOICE, the Australian consumer group, notes that each insurer sets its own cut-off; for the Anak Krakatau disruption the reference point is around 5-7 September 2026. For Lewotobi, some insurers set cut-offs as early as November 2024 and others in June 2025, so a newly bought policy may not cover disruption from that volcano. Typically covered: extra accommodation and meals caused by the delay, replacement tickets, and prepaid parts of the trip you lose. Keep the cancellation email, hotel receipts, and meal receipts.
Where do you check flight and volcano status?
- The airline app and email: the fastest source for your flight number. Make sure the phone number and email on the booking are right.
- Official I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport channels (InJourney Airports) for announcements on closures or operating hours.
- MAGMA Indonesia (magma.esdm.go.id), run by the volcanology agency PVMBG: volcano alert levels I-IV and VONA, the ash notices for aviation using green, yellow, orange, and red codes. An orange or red VONA for a volcano near your route is the signal to expect schedule changes.
- Terminal, immigration, and baggage details are in our Ngurah Rai Airport guide.
Stuck in Bali: what about your hotel and visa?
Extend your room early, before hotels near the airport fill up with other stranded passengers. An AccessiaPass stay voucher is one quick way to add a night or two at a price you already know before you reach the front desk. If it is your arrival that gets pushed back, hotel date changes and refunds are covered in our article on hotel cancellations and rescheduling in Bali.
On permission to stay, the Directorate General of Immigration has granted an emergency stay permit (Izin Tinggal Keadaan Terpaksa) of up to 30 days with zero overstay charges to foreigners whose flights were cancelled by the Lewotobi eruption (Circular IMI-568.GR.01.01 of 2025) and by Anak Krakatau in September 2026. You need a cancellation statement from the airline, airport authority, or aviation authority, plus your passport and visa. The policy is granted event by event, so do not assume it applies: go to an immigration office before your permit runs out. Without a special policy, the normal fines explained in our Bali overstay fine article apply.
One step people forget: ask the airline counter for a written cancellation statement on the spot. The same document serves your insurance claim and immigration, and it is much harder to get once you are home.
