I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport (code DPS) handles tens of millions of passengers a year, and most holiday drama happens in the first 90 minutes: the immigration queue, an arrival card QR nobody filled in, a suitcase held at customs. This guide focuses on what happens inside the terminal building. Visas, transfers into town and the foreign tourist levy are covered separately.
Terminals & Peak Hours
- Two terminals side by side. The International and Domestic Terminals are linked by a pedestrian corridor, about a 5–10 minute walk with a suitcase. View on Google Maps
- The Domestic Terminal is smaller and usually faster, except during the Jakarta and Surabaya flight waves. View on Google Maps
- Busy windows: international arrivals 09:00–14:00 and 21:00–01:00; departures 05:00–08:00 and 22:00–01:00.
- Annual peaks: July–August, 20 December–5 January and the Lebaran holidays. On Nyepi the airport closes completely for 24 hours.
Arrivals: Arrival Card, Autogates & Baggage
- The All Indonesia Arrival Card is mandatory and free, filed online up to three days before you land. It merges the paper arrival card, the electronic customs declaration (e-CD) and the health declaration into one QR emailed to you. Save a screenshot.
- Immigration autogates: around 90 units with facial recognition, just 15–25 seconds per person.
- Who qualifies: Indonesian citizens with any passport type, plus foreign nationals with electronic passports holding an e-VOA, e-Visa, KITAS, KITAP or registered visa-free status. Pay the e-VOA online before flying; non-electronic passports go to a manual counter.
- Baggage claim: check the belt number on the screens, then your bags pass an x-ray and an officer scans your arrival card QR before the exit doors.
Customs: Allowances & Problem Items
- Tobacco: 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars or 100 grams of loose tobacco per adult passenger.
- Alcohol: a maximum of 1 litre per adult passenger (21 and over). Excess excisable goods are destroyed on the spot and cannot be redeemed by paying duty.
- Other personal goods are duty free up to FOB USD 500 per person per arrival; above that, duty and taxes apply. The rule is PMK 203/2017 as amended by PMK 34/2025 — check beacukai.go.id before you travel.
- Vapes and nicotine liquid in personal quantities only; large stocks are treated as commercial.
- Prescription medicine in original packaging with a doctor's letter; narcotic and psychotropic classes need a permit.
- Drones need proof of ownership and permission to fly. Animal products, plants, seeds, fresh fruit and meat fall under quarantine rules.
Facilities Inside the Terminal
- Paid lounges in both international and domestic departures, around Rp250,000–600,000 per person for 2–3 hours.
- Official SIM card counters in arrivals; tourist packages around Rp150,000–350,000, often cheaper outside the airport.
- Money changers and ATMs run 24 hours, but airport rates are poorer — change only what you need.
- Left luggage costs roughly Rp50,000–100,000 per bag per day.
- Prayer rooms, family bathrooms, restaurants, cafes and free Wi-Fi are in both terminals.
- Wheelchairs and special assistance must be requested from your airline at least 48 hours ahead.
Departures, VAT Refund & Transit
- Arrive 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours for domestic; add an hour in peak season.
- Check-in closes 45–60 minutes before departure; low-cost carriers cap cabin bags at 7 kg, liquids at 100 ml per container, and power banks must travel in the cabin.
- The VAT refund is handled in the International Departure Terminal, open daily except Nyepi. You need purchases from stores labelled Tax Refund for Tourists, VAT of at least Rp50,000 per invoice and Rp500,000 in total, with invoices in your passport name.
- Paid fast track runs around Rp350,000–1 million per person, worth it in peak hours.
- International to domestic transit means collecting bags, clearing immigration and checking in again — leave 3–4 hours.
Sleeping Near the Airport the Night Before
- Tuban and south Kuta: 5–10 minutes to the terminal, hotels around Rp350,000–1.2 million. View on Google Maps
- Jimbaran: 15–20 minutes, plenty of resorts at Rp1–3 million. Nusa Dua is 25–30 minutes for a slower final night.
- Check the earliest breakfast time and shuttle availability before booking.
A smooth airport day starts the night before. Compare hotel rates in Tuban, Kuta and Jimbaran, then book an AccessiaPass stay voucher to lock in a room near the airport — far cheaper than a last-minute booking once that early flight is staring you down.
