Desa Oculus vs Toteme Glamping Kintamani: Which One Suits You?

Desa Oculus suits travellers who want a comfortable room with a balcony facing Mount Batur and the lake; Toteme Glamping suits sunrise hikers who want to sleep near the trailhead and soak in hot water afterwards. Both are in Kintamani, but at different levels: Oculus on the caldera rim, Toteme down on the shore of Lake Batur.

Desa Oculus: suites on the caldera rim

It sits on Jl. Windu Sara, Kedisan, near the Penelokan road, about two hours' drive from the airport. The official site lists four room types, all with balconies: Deluxe Lake View 37.5 m², Panorama Suite and Summit Suite at 39 m² each, and Suite Mountain View at 42 m². There is an infinity pool, Danu Spa and the Kedisan restaurant. Booking direct adds afternoon tea, an à la carte breakfast, 10% off food and one firepit session.

Price: OTA aggregators show rooms from about US$60-85 a night, roughly Rp1-1.4 million (checked October 2026). Villas with private pools, also sold on OTAs, cost far more.

Downsides from reviews: lots of stairs in a multi-storey building, and sources disagree on whether there is a lift. An October 2026 review complains about pool cleanliness and inconsistent breakfast. Rooms have no TV or fridge, dinner in-house is considered pricey, Grab is hard to get, and traffic noise can start around 3am when the sunrise jeeps roll past.

Toteme Glamping: lakeside tents with a hot spring

Toteme is on Jalan Songan in the Toya Bungkah area, about 500 m from the start of the Mount Batur sunrise trek. There are two air-conditioned tent types with king beds and terraces: Standard at 19 m² with a shared bathroom outside the tent, and Deluxe at 26 m² with a private bathroom. The natural hot spring pool is free for overnight guests.

Price: Trip.com shows an average of about Rp2.08 million a night for 23-24 October 2026. Non-guests can buy a day pass for Rp400,000 per person (age 6 and up), valid 7am-4pm, including Rp300,000 food and drink credit and a towel.

Downsides from 2026 reviews: flies are a recurring complaint around the lake, tents feel damp and cold at night with no heating, restaurant music carries to the tents, and Standard guests must climb down steep steps to the shared bathrooms. There are no shops nearby, so bring water and snacks.

So which one?

  • Couples, honeymooners or a few days of remote work: Desa Oculus. Bigger rooms, the view from the balcony, and Penelokan cafés within walking distance.
  • Batur hikers, budget pairs or hot spring chasers: Toteme. Waking at 3.30am and walking to the trailhead beats driving down from the rim.
  • Families with older relatives: both have stairs. Ask for a lower-floor room (Oculus) or book a Deluxe tent (Toteme) to skip the shared bathroom walk.
  • Day visitors: the Toteme day pass pairs well with canoeing on Lake Batur from Kedisan.

Contacts and location

Night temperatures in Kintamani can drop below 15°C, more so by the lake. Pack a jacket and thick socks, especially if you choose a tent.
