How Much Does Medical Evacuation From Bali to Australia Cost?

A medical evacuation by air ambulance from Bali to Australia is generally estimated at AUD40,000-150,000, depending on the patient's condition, the destination city and the medical team on board. If the patient is stable enough to fly on a commercial plane with a medical escort, estimates drop to about USD5,000-15,000.

No official price list is published. The figures below come from insurers and 2026 cost guides, so treat them as ranges; checked 27 October 2026. Treatment costs in Bali are covered separately in how much a doctor or ER visit costs in Bali without insurance; this article is only about getting a patient home.

What do Australian sources say it costs?

  • Go Insurance (Australia): air ambulance from Bali to Australia AUD40,000-90,000, depending on the medical team and aircraft.
  • 1Cover: its repatriation table lists Bali by air ambulance at AUD55,000-150,000, noting the figures are indicative and every case differs.
  • Your Happiness Tours (Bali hospital guide, 20 April 2026): air ambulance to Australia USD80,000-150,000, to Singapore USD50,000-80,000, and a commercial flight with a medical escort for stable patients USD5,000-15,000. The FAQ on the same page gives USD80,000-150,000 for Singapore, Bangkok or Darwin, so its Singapore figure is inconsistent.

We found no public price list from air ambulance operators such as International SOS or the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Quotes are usually built case by case.

What pushes the bill up?

  • Type of flight. A commercial seat plus a nurse costs far less than a chartered ambulance jet. Patients on a stretcher or ventilator almost always need a dedicated jet.
  • Destination. Darwin is closer than Sydney or Melbourne. Many policies only promise the "nearest appropriate facility", which can mean Singapore rather than home.
  • Medical crew. An ICU doctor and nurse on board, monitoring equipment, oxygen, and road ambulances at both ends.
  • Waiting time. Until a patient is fit to fly, they stay in hospital in Bali. ICU at private hospitals such as BIMC or Siloam is estimated at USD1,500-2,500 a night before specialist fees (Your Happiness Tours, April 2026).

Will the Australian Government help pay?

No. Smartraveller, DFAT's official site, states that the government can't pay medical bills overseas; if you have no insurance and can't pay, you are told to contact family or friends. DFAT also says it doesn't lend money except in exceptional circumstances. If a loan is given, you may have to surrender your passport on return until it is repaid, and repayment is due within six months.

Medicare and Australian private health insurance don't apply overseas either (Compare the Market, updated 28 May 2026). That is why evacuation is the biggest item a travel policy has to carry.

Who decides on an evacuation?

If you are insured, the insurer's emergency assistance team decides together with the treating doctor: whether evacuation is needed, where to, when the patient is fit to fly, and on what aircraft. Call your insurer's 24-hour emergency number before agreeing to major treatment or booking flights yourself. Self-arranged evacuations without approval are often not reimbursed.

What should you check in your policy before you go?

  • Evacuation limit. Some policies are unlimited, others have a cap. Make sure the number sits well above the ranges above.
  • Motorbikes and licences. Medical costs from unlicensed driving are unlikely to be covered (Compare the Market). Many policies require a motorcycle licence from home plus an international driving permit; whether an IDP is valid in Indonesia is covered in is an international driving permit valid in Bali.
  • Alcohol and drugs. Claims from alcohol- or drug-related incidents generally aren't covered. The exact limit is whatever the policy wording says.
  • Pre-existing conditions. Heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy: declare them, or a related evacuation can be refused.
  • Evacuation destination. Look for "repatriation to Australia" versus "nearest appropriate facility".

What do reported cases look like?

March 2026. Yahoo News Australia (9 March 2026) reported on Alivia Jane Campbell, a mother of two from the NSW Central Coast, who suffered severe brain trauma and a broken pelvis after her scooter collided with a truck in Bali. The report said she was understood to be uninsured. A GoFundMe for hospital costs and possible medical transport home had raised AUD63,400 at the time.

August 2026. NZ Herald (25 August 2026) reported on Amy Donohue from the Gold Coast, injured in a scooter crash while attending a friend's wedding in Bali. Her GoFundMe said medical expenses had passed AUD30,000 and were still rising, with donations going toward evacuation costs; it had raised nearly AUD9,000 at the time. Her insurance status was unknown.

Both cases started with a scooter, and both patients were still in hospital in Bali when fundraising began. Emergency numbers and hospitals used by tourists are in our Bali emergency health guide; other road rules are on the Bali rules page.

Follow-up questions

Is evacuation to Singapore cheaper? Usually, because it is closer, but sources disagree on the numbers. If your policy only covers the "nearest facility", flying on to Australia afterwards can be a separate cost.

My credit card includes travel insurance. Is that enough? Check whether medical evacuation is included and what the cap is. Many only activate if the trip was paid with that card.

If I'm already uninsured, what can I do? Ask the hospital for a written estimate, ask whether a commercial flight with a medical escort is possible if the doctor considers the patient stable, and contact the Australian Consulate-General in Bali for consular help. The consulate can help reach family but won't pay the bill.
