Operasi Patuh Agung 2026 in Bali: Will Tourists Be Checked?

Yes. Bali Regional Police (Polda Bali) are running Operasi Patuh Agung 2026 for 14 days, from Monday 26 October to Sunday 8 November 2026, and the tourist areas of Canggu, Sanur, Kuta and Ubud are named focus zones. Foreign visitors riding a rented scooter or driving a rental car are treated like locals: you must show a valid driving licence and the vehicle registration (STNK), and wear a helmet.

These details come from ANTARA Bali and detikBali, both published on 26 October 2026 (checked 26 October 2026). The operation deploys 1,055 officers, 262 from Polda Bali and 793 from district police units across the island, supported by the military police, the Bali Transport Agency and Jasa Raharja.

Why now?

Crashes are rising. Ditlantas Polda Bali data quoted by ANTARA show 7,393 traffic accidents from January to September 2026, up 26 percent from 5,879 in the same period of 2025. Deaths rose to 415 (from 404) and minor injuries to 9,581. Bali traffic director Kombes Yong Ferrydjon said violations by foreigners are most often caught in the tourist belt from Canggu to Sanur (detikBali, 26 October 2026). Police are also preparing specific measures for foreign offenders, involving rental associations and consulates.

Where are checks most likely?

  • Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Tabanan: the high-traffic regencies ANTARA lists as the main focus.
  • Canggu, Sanur, Kuta, Ubud: tourist areas named specifically.
  • Buleleng: Buleleng Police are watching the main roads of Singaraja, the Pancasari area that visitors pass through, and city parks on Saturday nights (detikBali, 26 October 2026).

Police do not publish daily checkpoint locations. Polda Bali also monitors traffic by CCTV, so a violation can be recorded with no officer in sight.

What do they check?

Buleleng Police say they check driving licences, STNK and roadworthiness, with special attention to riders without helmets. Buleleng police chief AKBP Ruzi Gusman said obvious violations will get an on-the-spot warning. Polda Bali stresses a "humane" and educational approach, but that is no guarantee you will not be fined.

For the 2026 national Operasi Patuh, Merahputih and Jawapos reported the targets as violations likely to cause crashes: riding against traffic, no helmet, using a phone while riding, and covered or altered number plates. No Bali-specific list had been published by 26 October 2026, so treat the national list as the guide.

What if I do not have a valid licence?

This is the biggest risk. International driving permits from many countries are not automatically valid in Indonesia; see is an international driving permit valid in Bali. If you lack a recognised licence, the safest choice for these two weeks is not to drive: use Grab or Gojek, a day driver or a hotel shuttle. Fine amounts and how to pay are covered in getting a traffic ticket in Bali, and helmet rules in helmet rules for tourists.

Camera fines and rental scooters

ANTARA reports that ETLE camera violations in Bali rose about 28 percent in 2026, and notices go to the registered owner's address. For a rented scooter or car, the registered owner is the rental business. Check your rental contract for who pays fines issued during the rental, and photograph the vehicle at handover.

Before you ride this week

  • Carry a valid licence and your passport (or a copy), plus the original STNK from the rental.
  • Wear a fastened helmet, rider and passenger.
  • Do not hold your phone while riding, including for Google Maps.
  • Check the number plate and lights on a rental scooter before setting off.
  • If stopped, stay calm, ask which rule you broke and pay through the official channel. Avoid on-the-spot "settlements".

If your plans depend on a rental scooter, staying somewhere walkable such as Sanur or central Ubud cuts down on driving, and AccessiaPass has hotel vouchers in both areas. Other rules worth knowing are on the Bali rules page.
