Perched on a hilltop on the Kintamani (Bangli) border, Pura Puncak Penulisan — also known as Pura Tegeh Koripan — is the highest temple in Bali, sitting at roughly 1,745 m above sea level. It lies right beside the Kintamani–Kubutambahan road in the Sukawana/Penulisan area. The air here is far cooler than the rest of Bali, often wrapped in thin mist, and on clear mornings you can watch a sea of clouds spread out below.
An Ancient Terraced Bali Aga Temple
This is one of the oldest sacred sites in Bali. To reach the main courtyard, visitors climb hundreds of terraced stone steps, echoing the tradition of stepped stone platforms. The summit courtyard holds a collection of ancient arca (stone statues) and lingga, some believed to date from the 10th to 14th centuries, giving the place a deeply sacred, historic atmosphere.
Visiting Tips
- Come early (around 07:00–10:00) for the best chance of seeing the sea of clouds before the mist rolls in.
- Bring a jacket — it can feel cold, especially when misty or rainy.
- Dress modestly and be sure to wear a sarong and sash when entering the temple.
- Save some energy for the many steps; comfortable footwear helps a lot.
- Combine it with a trip around Kintamani, Lake Batur, or a drive to North Bali.
