Warung Sulawesi Kerobokan: Legendary Buffet-Style Nasi Campur Near Petitenget

Down a small lane in the Petitenget–Mertanadi area of Kerobokan, not far from the Pepito supermarket, Warung Sulawesi (often written Waroeng Sulawesi) has long been an open secret among locals and expats. No air conditioning, no thick menu book — just a row of pots filled with home-cooked Sulawesi and Indonesian dishes, a shaded courtyard under a big tree, and prices that feel impossible for southern Bali.

How Ordering Works

It runs buffet style: take a plate, point at the dishes you want, and the staff add it up at the till. You do not need Indonesian — the team is used to foreign guests and speaks good English.

The Dishes People Come For

  • Ayam woku — chicken in the fragrant yellow-green North Sulawesi spice broth, fresh and fiery.
  • Ikan cakalang, shredded skipjack tuna, alongside spiced fried fish.
  • Slow-cooked rendang and chicken curry.
  • Young jackfruit stew, stir-fried long beans, terong balado, tempe and tahu — plenty for vegetarians; ask for a sambal without shrimp paste if you need it.
  • Es pisang ijo, the classic Makassar dessert, and freshly brewed iced sweet tea.

When to Arrive So Nothing Runs Out

  • The warung opens in the morning around 08.00, but the full spread is only ready around 10.00.
  • The sweet spot is 11.00–12.30 — every pot is still full and the queue is short.
  • After 14.00 favourites such as ayam woku are often gone.
  • No alcohol is served, and the spread leans on chicken, fish, egg, tempe and vegetables, so it suits anyone avoiding pork; ask the staff directly if you need halal certainty.
