Yes. Since 1 April 2026 Bank Indonesia and the Bank of Korea have run a cross-border QRIS link, so Korean visitors can scan QRIS codes at warungs, cafes and shops in Bali with a Korean bank app and pay in rupiah converted directly from won. As of 3 November 2026, the apps announced for use in Indonesia are KB Star Banking (KB Kookmin Bank), Shinhan SOL Pay (Shinhan Card, since 29 October 2026) and the Woori Card app; Naver Pay and Kakao Pay are not.
This summary draws on Indonesia Business Post (6 April 2026, quoting BI and BOK), Herald Economy and Aju Business Daily (2 April 2026, KB announcement), Segye Ilbo (16 July 2026), SBS Biz and Metro Seoul (29 October 2026, Shinhan announcement) and News Tomato (12 December 2025). All checked on 3 November 2026.
Before you go: which apps actually work?
- KB Star Banking. KB extended its "KB스타뱅킹 해외결제" service to all of Indonesia on 1 April 2026, covering more than 32 million QRIS merchants, Bali included. It runs on the Korea Financial Telecommunications and Clearings Institute (금융결제원) network linked directly to QRIS, so there is no double conversion from won to dollars to rupiah. According to Segye Ilbo's report from Jakarta, the money comes from your KB account and Star Points are applied automatically.
- Shinhan SOL Pay. Live from 29 October 2026. You top up the prepaid "신한Pay머니" balance in won, then scan QRIS. According to Shinhan Card (quoted by SBS Biz), there is no international brand fee and no overseas service fee, and the QR transaction fee is waived until 30 June 2027.
- Woori Card. Segye Ilbo says it can also pay by QR in Indonesia. That article gives no fee details.
- Naver Pay and Kakao Pay. In News Tomato's test in Jakarta (December 2025), Indonesia was not on either app's overseas payment country list; payment was only possible indirectly through networks such as Alipay+ or UnionPay at merchants with that hardware. Check again in the app before you fly, because this list can change.
What does it cost?
For Shinhan the official figures are clear: no international brand fee, no overseas service fee, and a QR fee of zero until 30 June 2027. KB only says costs are "lower" because there is no double conversion; it has not published an exchange margin or per-transaction fee in its press release, so check the confirmation screen in the app before you tap pay. Compare that with cards: Korean cards used abroad usually carry an international brand fee and an overseas service fee, plus the risk of dynamic currency conversion if the cashier offers to bill you in won.
On the merchant side, Bank Indonesia rules forbid shops from passing the QRIS MDR fee to the buyer. If a cashier adds a "QR fee", you can refuse. The full background on QRIS for foreign visitors is in our QRIS for tourists article.
How to pay, step by step
- Set it up in Korea. Log in, update the app, and for Shinhan top up Pay머니 before you fly. SMS verification is often needed; make sure your Korean number still receives SMS while roaming.
- Look for the QRIS sticker. The red-and-white QRIS logo sits at the till, on tables or on the card machine. In KB, open "지갑" in the bottom menu, then "결제", choose "해외결제" and Indonesia, then scan.
- Static vs dynamic QR. A printed sticker (static) means you type the amount yourself; show the screen to the cashier before confirming. A QR on the machine's screen (dynamic) already contains the amount.
- Match the merchant name shown in the app with the shop name. Keep a screenshot of the receipt until the cashier confirms the payment arrived.
- You need data. Payments fail on weak signal. Compare roaming and eSIM costs in our Korean roaming article.
What people often miss
- You still need cash. Parking, village fees, temple offerings and some drivers do not take QR. If you exchange won, see the won spread at Bali money changers, which can be much wider than for yen or Australian dollars.
- Large hotels and villas often want a credit card for the deposit, not QR. When paying by card, choose to be billed in rupiah; the reason is in our rupiah or won article.
- Transaction limits follow your bank app, not Bali rules. For villa rentals or multi-day tours, check your daily limit first.
- Refunds. QR refunds go back through the Korean bank app and cannot be given in cash at the shop. Ask for a receipt and the merchant name if there is a dispute.
FAQ
Can I pay QRIS with a travel debit card such as Travel Wallet?
The announcements we checked only name KB, Shinhan and Woori. Prepaid travel cards still work as Visa or Mastercard on card machines, not through QRIS.
Can Indonesian tourists pay by QR in Korea yet?
Segye Ilbo (July 2026) said the reverse direction was still being prepared. Wikitree reported something different: the provider Coocon linked QRIS to some merchants in Korea from 1 April 2026. The two sources do not agree yet.
Which exchange rate is used?
The rate is set by the Korean bank behind the app at the time of payment and is shown in won on the confirmation screen. Note that figure if you want to compare it with money changer rates.
