Anomali Coffee Ubud: Tasting Indonesia’s Coffee Map at One Table

A few minutes on foot from Puri Saren, wedged between textile shops and tour agents on Jalan Raya Ubud, sits a small coffee bar offering something rare among tourist cafés: Indonesia’s coffee map, tasted one cup at a time. Anomali Coffee was founded in Jakarta on 27 August 2007 as a micro roaster that roasts only Indonesian beans, and the Ubud outlet carries the same principle — beans roasted in house, origins explained, then brewed in front of you.

One Roaster, Many Origins

The single origin list on the board rotates with the harvest seasons, but a few names are almost always there:

  • Aceh Gayo — full bodied, spice and dark chocolate; the one that stands up best to milk.
  • Toraja — earthy and low in acidity, the Sulawesi classic for people who dislike sour coffee.
  • Bali Kintamani — bright and citrusy, grown interplanted with orange trees on the slopes of Mount Batur.
  • Flores Bajawa — caramel sweet, medium bodied, the easiest one for beginners to love.
  • Java and Papua — Preanger and Wamena appear in rotation; ask the barista what is in stock that day.

Which Single Origin for Which Palate

  • If you like sweet milk coffee: order the kopi susu gula aren (palm sugar latte) built on Gayo or the house blend.
  • If you want fruit and tea notes: take Kintamani or Bajawa as a manual brew rather than espresso.
  • If you are learning to taste: order two different manual brews at once and sip alternately once they cool to lukewarm — that is where the differences show most.
  • If you want a souvenir: buy whole beans and ask them to grind for the brewer you actually own at home.

Brew Methods and Price Range

Besides espresso, the baristas usually keep several manual methods ready: V60/drip, French press, syphon and even wood neck — availability changes, so ask first. Prices as of 2026: americano around Rp31,000, caffè latte around Rp40,000, palm sugar milk coffee around Rp42,000, manual brew/drip around Rp50,000 and cold brew around Rp70,000, before tax and service. Retail beans start at roughly Rp75,000 for a 100 gram pack, with 200 gram, 500 gram and 1 kilogram options.
