Bukit Labuhan Amuk, Karangasem: Worth the Climb for Sunrise?

Bukit Labuhan Amuk in Antiga village, Manggis district, Karangasem, gives you Amuk Bay from above: calm blue water, fishing boats, and a pier in the distance. It is 1.5-2 hours from Denpasar, has no official ticket desk on record, and the path up is steep (on-site report by budayabali.com, April 2025; checked October 2026).

The good

The bay panorama is the whole reason to come. The sun rises over the sea, and in the late afternoon orange light drops behind the hills. The top is roomy enough to camp, and nights are quiet apart from waves below.

The not so good

  • The path to the top is steep and can be slippery, especially after rain. Not great for small children or bad knees.
  • There are almost no public facilities. Bring water, snacks, a torch, and your own camping gear if you plan to stay.
  • Recent information is very thin. We found no fee, hours, or official operator, so ask locals in Antiga before you head up.

Worth it?

Yes, if you are already in east Bali and want one crowd-free morning. No, as a stand-alone trip from Kuta. It makes most sense paired with a short stop at Wates Yeh Malet Beach or snorkelling at Blue Lagoon Padangbai. For sunrise, staying a night in Padangbai or Candidasa is far more realistic than leaving the south before dawn, and you can check hotel vouchers in that area on AccessiaPass.

Practical info

  • Location: Antiga village, Manggis, Karangasem. View on Google Maps
  • Tickets: no official fee on record; bring cash for parking or a donation.
  • From Ubud: our estimate is 1-1.5 hours via Klungkung.
  • Recent photos: search on Instagram

Come down before the sun is high. The slope is exposed and has almost no shade after nine.
