Wates Yeh Malet Beach charges no entrance fee; according to detikBali (December 2022), visitors only pay for parking. This black-sand beach sits in Banjar Dinas Yeh Malet, Antiga Kelod village, Manggis district, exactly on the line between Klungkung and Karangasem regencies. That is what "wates" means: border.
What is the statue on the beach?
The Surya Candra statue: the sun god Surya standing beside the moon goddess Candra on top of the serpent Ananta Boga. Karangasem's tourism office consecrated and unveiled it in late December 2019 as a gateway marker for Bali's easternmost regency, where the sun rises first. The statue is why most cars pull over here.
Where exactly is it, and how far from Padangbai?
On the main Klungkung-Karangasem road. On OpenStreetMap it lies about 2 km east of Pura Goa Lawah and about 3 km west of Padangbai port (straight line). That makes it an easy 20-30 minute stop before a boat from Padangbai, or after visiting Pura Goa Lawah.
Is there food and facilities?
detikBali lists vendors selling bakso, lalapan, fried rice and satay, a few places to sit, and several photo spots besides the statue. No source mentions toilets, so don't count on them.
Can you swim here?
No source mentions lifeguards or a safe swimming zone. The Bali provincial government's Love Bali site describes it as a black-sand beach that glitters in the sun, not a swimming beach. Treat it as a place to sit and look at the sea. For snorkelling, Bias Tugel Beach in Padangbai makes far more sense.
When is it busiest?
The head of Banjar Yeh Malet told detikBali that the peaks are Galungan, Kuningan, New Year and Saturday nights. During Galungan the car park fills and vehicles spill onto the road shoulder. He recommends late afternoon for relaxing; pick a weekday afternoon if you want the statue without a photo queue.
What are the downsides?
The beach sits right on the main road that also carries traffic to Padangbai port, so you hear vehicles the whole time. The most detailed coverage dates from 2022 and no 2025-2026 updates could be found, so parking fees and the number of vendors may have changed. If you want a quiet white-sand beach, this is not it.
