Pura Goa Lawah Klungkung: The Enchanting Bat Cave Temple on Bali's Coast

Sitting right along the coastal highway connecting Sanur toward Padangbai and Candidasa, Pura Goa Lawah is one of Bali's most unique and sacred temples. The name "Goa Lawah" means bat cave, referring to the natural cave within the temple complex inhabited by thousands of bats. The temple stands in Pesinggahan Village, Klungkung Regency, and is a favourite stop for travellers on Bali's eastern route.

Sacred Significance as a Sad Kahyangan

Pura Goa Lawah is one of the Sad Kahyangan, the six (in some traditions nine) principal temples believed to be the spiritual pillars of Bali, guarding the balance of the cardinal directions. Thought to have been founded around the 11th century by Mpu Kuturan, it occupies the southeastern direction and is associated with the element of the sea. Facing the ocean, Pura Goa Lawah often hosts melasti ceremonies and rituals related to purification and honouring the sea.

The Bat Cave & the Legend of Naga Basuki

The main attraction is the dark cave mouth crowded with thousands of bats hanging and fluttering, creating a distinctive sound and sight. According to local belief, the cave is linked to the legend of Naga Basuki, the giant dragon-serpent that guards the world's balance. The cave tunnel is believed to stretch far inland, all the way to Pura Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung. Visitors may not enter the cave due to its sacredness, but the area in front of it remains captivating to observe and photograph.

Dress Code & Etiquette

As an active place of worship, please keep a few things in mind:

  • A sarong (kamen) and sash are required for every visitor as a sign of respect. Sarong rental is available on site if you don't bring your own.
  • Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees.
  • Women who are menstruating are traditionally asked not to enter the main temple area.
  • Keep quiet and do not disturb worshippers.

The Beach & Surroundings

Directly across from the temple lies a black-sand beach lined with colourful traditional fishing boats (jukung). The sea view with fishing boats makes the area especially scenic in the morning. Many visitors combine a stop at Pura Goa Lawah with trips to Padangbai, Candidasa, or the Kertha Gosa Park in central Klungkung.
