If Seminyak feels too crowded and Ubud too busy, Soori Bali is the answer at the other end of the island. This villa resort sits in Banjar Dukuh, Kelating village, Kerambitan district, Tabanan — on an almost empty stretch of black-sand coast, framed by rice fields and the silhouette of Mount Batukaru. The architecture is by Soo K. Chan of SCDA Architects, who also owns and runs the resort with his wife Ling Fu: exposed concrete, local volcanic stone and clean lines that frame the sea.
Villas and facilities
- Every villa has a private pool — Ocean Pool Villa, Beach Pool Villa and types facing the rice fields and mountains, all one bedroom.
- Larger residences for families or groups, with options up to six and ten bedrooms (Soori Residence and Soori Estate).
- A main infinity pool looking straight out at the Indian Ocean, plus a spa using local ingredients.
- Two main restaurants: Cotta beside the pool for all-day Indonesian and Asian dishes, and Ombak, the Mediterranean beachfront signature restaurant with a bar for sunsets.
- Light activities such as cooking classes and morning walks through the surrounding rice fields can usually be arranged through the concierge.
Who it suits
This is a place for honeymoons, anniversaries or a serious digital detox. Bear in mind it is genuinely remote: roughly 1.5 hours by car from Ngurah Rai Airport and about 30–40 minutes from Tanah Lot. There are no cafes or shops within walking distance, so arrange a car with driver if you want to explore. If your holiday runs on beach clubs and a new restaurant every night, Canggu makes far more sense.
