Sanghyang Dedari Museum, Geriana Kauh: A Quiet Village Museum

The Sanghyang Dedari Museum in Banjar Dinas Geriana Kauh, Duda Utara village, Selat district, is the easiest way to understand the sacred Sanghyang Dedari dance without waiting for the ceremony. Entry is by donation and, according to detikTravel (December 2023), it opens daily from 08:00 to 16:00 Bali time.

What is inside

The museum was inaugurated on 12 November 2019, growing out of an idea by University of Indonesia researcher Saras Dewi in 2016. It explains the dance, displays the dancers' props and the lontar manuscripts that record its story, and shows farming tools such as the lampit, tengala and ani-ani. The link is direct: the dance is the farmers' offering to keep pests away and protect the harvest.

What you should know

• The Sanghyang Dedari dance is performed only in rituals of the Geriana Kauh customary village, never as a tourist show. Do not expect to see it on your visit.
• The village head asks visitors to wear at least semi-formal temple dress: covered clothing and a sash.
• Visitors are accompanied by a guide or foundation staff. Because visitors are few, message the village or the museum's social media before you come.

An honest verdict

This is a small village museum, not a big gallery. Karangasem tourism office figures for 2026 record only about 62 visitors from January to August, and the village head admitted in 2022 that the museum had not yet managed to draw tourists. If you want photo spots, look elsewhere. If you want to understand how rice fields, ritual and dance connect in east Bali, an hour here says more than many busier places.

• Combine it with Jagasatru Waterfall or Bukit Putung, both in Selat district.

Hours and the donation system were checked in October 2026 against detik's reporting; since staff are not always on site, getting in touch first remains the safest move.
