Bukit Putung, Karangasem: East Bali Panorama With No Queue for Photos

If Lahangan Sweet and Bukit Belong have turned into photo queues, the ridge at Putung hamlet in Duda Timur village still holds something increasingly rare in east Bali: a wide view, cool air and almost nobody around. The road up there, winding across the southern flank of Mount Agung, is already half the reason to come.

What you can see from up there

Putung sits on Agung's southern slope, so the view drops away below you — into the valley rather than up to a peak.

  • Rice terraces and salak (snakefruit) groves stepping down into the valley; Karangasem is Bali's snakefruit heartland.
  • The east Bali coastline towards Manggis and Candidasa, sometimes with fishing boats showing as white specks.
  • Nusa Penida as a dark silhouette across the strait, clearest when the air is genuinely clean.
  • Behind you, the summit of Mount Agung — most open before 9am, before the cloud builds up.

Routes and road conditions

  • From Sidemen: the closest, roughly 20–30 minutes via Selat then Duda Timur.
  • From Candidasa or Padangbai: 40–50 minutes climbing via Manggis; this ascent is well known among cyclists because it rises from sea level with almost no let-up.
  • From Ubud: about 1.5 hours. From Kuta or the airport, allow 2.5 hours.
  • The road is narrow, steep and full of bends. A small automatic scooter with two riders will struggle in places, and the asphalt turns slippery in rain; large buses cannot get in.
  • There is no street lighting. Avoid descending after dark unless you know the route well.

Best time and what is available

Come early, around 6.30–9am, when Agung is clearest and mist still hangs in the valley — or between 4pm and 5.30pm for soft light on the terraces. Midday light is harsh and the cloud has usually risen.

  • Putung has been developed as a tourism spot since the 1970s. There are still a few roadside warungs with view terraces and small guesthouses, but opening hours are unreliable — carry your own water and snacks.
  • There is no official ticket; occasionally a voluntary parking box, so keep small change handy.
  • Easy to combine with Sidemen, Tirta Gangga, Taman Ujung or the fast boats from Padangbai.
