The overstay fine in Indonesia is IDR 1,000,000 per person per day, counted from the first day after your permitted stay ends. The figure is listed on the foreigner services page of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office and in guidance from the Surakarta Immigration Office (checked September 2026). The fine only covers overstays of up to 59 days; from day 60 the penalty becomes deportation and an entry ban.
Before you run late: check these three things
- Your official expiry date. Read the date on your e-VOA or passport stamp rather than counting from your arrival. The arrival day is generally counted as day one.
- Your flight time. A 00:30 departure means you leave on the next calendar day. If your stay ends on the 10th and your flight leaves at 00:30 on the 11th, you are already one day over.
- The extension deadline. The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office asks for VOA extension applications no later than 7 days before your stay expires.
Sample fine calculations
- Stay ends 10 October, you leave 13 October: 3 days x IDR 1,000,000 = IDR 3,000,000.
- A couple both 5 days over: 2 people x 5 days x IDR 1,000,000 = IDR 10,000,000.
- 59 days over: IDR 59,000,000, the highest fine before the penalty changes.
For comparison, a 30-day VOA extension costs IDR 500,000. A single day late already costs twice as much as extending.
What happens if I overstay 60 days or more?
Paying is no longer an option. Immigration applies administrative action: deportation plus an entry ban. According to the Surakarta Immigration Office, Law No. 63 of 2024 allows bans of up to 10 years, extendable by another 10. Deportation can also apply to overstays under 60 days if you cannot pay the fine.
How do I pay the fine at the airport?
You pay during departure checks at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, before your passport is stamped out. Officers send you to the immigration supervisor's desk, where the amount is calculated and paid. Practical points:
- Arrive at least 3 hours before an international flight. The fine process takes time, and Ngurah Rai queues are already long at peak hours.
- Carry rupiah cash as a backup. Bali visa agents report that card payments sometimes cannot be processed.
- You can also settle the overstay beforehand at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office (Jimbaran) or the Denpasar office during working hours, which shortens things at the airport.
The international departure process at Ngurah Rai is covered in our Ngurah Rai airport guide.
VOA or e-VOA: how do extensions differ?
Both are valid for 30 days and can be extended once for 30 days at IDR 500,000 per application. The difference is the procedure:
- e-VOA (bought online at evisa.imigrasi.go.id): the extension is filed online from the same account and usually needs no office visit.
- VOA (bought at the airport counter): you must "claim" the stay permit on evisa.imigrasi.go.id, update your accommodation address, upload your passport and return ticket, pay, then visit an immigration office for a photo and interview.
Requirements, fees and full steps are in our Bali Visa on Arrival and e-VOA article. Once the 60 days are used up, a VOA cannot be extended again; you must leave Indonesia or switch to another visa type.
My flight was cancelled. Will I still be fined?
Possibly not, if the cause was outside your control and you have official proof. In February-March 2026, when Middle East airspace closures cancelled many flights, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office granted emergency stay permits and a zero-rupiah overstay rate to affected foreigners who carried an official letter from their airline or the airport authority. Such waivers are case by case. If your flight is cancelled close to your expiry date, get a written statement from the airline the same day and contact the immigration office.
