Lost Passport in Bali: Steps From Police Report to Flight Home

If your passport is lost or stolen in Bali, the order never changes: a police loss report, a replacement travel document from your country's mission, then the Immigration Office so your stay permit is moved onto the new document. That last step is the one people skip, and without it airport officers cannot find your entry record. Allow 3-10 working days in total, depending on your nationality. Everything below was checked in September 2026.

Step 1 (day one): police report

Go to the SPKT (integrated service desk) at the police station (Polsek) nearest to where it happened. In Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua, Polres Badung also handles reports; in Denpasar and Sanur, Polresta Denpasar. Ask for a lost property report (Surat Tanda Penerimaan Laporan Kehilangan). It is free.

  • Bring a photo or copy of your passport data page, your e-VOA or visa email, and your onward ticket if you have one.
  • Check the spelling of your name, passport number and date of birth on the report. One wrong letter can make the consulate or immigration send you back for a new one.
  • Ask for several copies. The consulate, immigration, your airline and your insurer may each want one.
  • Expect 1-3 hours, longer at night or on weekends.

If your wallet or phone went with the passport, list everything in one report. Travel insurers usually require a police report filed soon after the incident.

Step 2 (days 1-7): your consulate or embassy

Not every country has a consular office in Bali. Offices that actually operate in Denpasar include:

  • Australian Consulate-General, Jl. Tantular No. 32, Renon. Consular counter Monday-Friday 08:00-16:00, 24-hour emergency help. Its official site says an emergency passport can take several days, usually up to seven.
  • U.S. Consular Agency Bali, Jl. Hayam Wuruk No. 310, Denpasar. By appointment only, closed on weekends and on US and Indonesian holidays.
  • Consulate-General of Japan, Jl. Raya Puputan No. 170, Renon. Monday-Friday 08:30-12:00 and 13:30-16:00.

Most other nationalities are handled by their embassy in Jakarta. Some countries have an honorary consul in Bali who can help with paperwork, but the replacement document is still issued by the embassy. Check your foreign ministry's website for the current address and booking method. Prepare passport photos to your country's standard, the police report, a copy of the old passport and your ticket home. Many countries issue an emergency passport or temporary travel document valid only for the trip home; ask whether it can be used to transit through a third country.

Step 3 (1-3 working days): the Immigration Office

Your stay permit (VOA, e-VOA or other visa) is recorded against your old passport number. The new document is not linked to that record, so visit Immigration before you fly:

  • Ngurah Rai Immigration Office (Kantor Imigrasi Kelas I Khusus TPI Ngurah Rai), Jl. Raya Taman Jimbaran No. 1, Jimbaran. Monday-Thursday 08:00-16:00, Friday 08:00-16:30 WITA, according to ngurahrai.imigrasi.go.id.
  • Denpasar Immigration Office in Renon also serves foreigners. Ask which office covers the area where you are staying.

Bring the new passport or emergency document, the police report, proof of your visa or e-VOA, and your departure ticket. Officers record your stay permit onto the new document. ITAS/KITAS holders process a passport mutation through their sponsor, and anyone leaving on an emergency document may be asked for an Exit Permit Only. Do not book a flight on the same day as your immigration visit.

Watch your permit's expiry date. A lost passport does not extend it automatically. If your stay runs out before the new document is ready, extend it at Immigration; otherwise you face the overstay fine, charged per day.

For Indonesian citizens: replacing a lost passport

Indonesians who lose a passport while on holiday in Bali can apply for a replacement at the offices above. You need the police loss report, e-KTP, family card (KK) and a supporting document (birth certificate, diploma or marriage book). There is an interview (BAP) about how the passport was lost, so it takes longer than a normal application.

  • Lost passport fine: Rp1,000,000, under Government Regulation (PP) No. 45 of 2024 on immigration non-tax fees, in force since 17 December 2024.
  • The new passport fee is separate, for example Rp950,000 for a 10-year e-passport.
  • No fine is charged if the loss was caused by force majeure (disaster, fire) and backed by a letter from the relevant authority.

For a domestic flight home, your KTP is enough. A replacement passport is only urgent if you must fly abroad straight away.

Passport copies people forget they have

Before you panic about having no photocopy, check three places. First, your hotel or villa: almost every property scans or copies passports at check-in to report foreign guests to immigration, and reception will usually give you a copy. Second, your e-VOA or e-Visa confirmation email, which shows the old passport number. Third, the scooter rental shop: some still ask for a passport as a deposit, a practice you should refuse, and a "lost" passport sometimes turns out to be sitting there.

Once the replacement document is issued, update the passport number on your flight booking. Airlines send passenger data to the destination country before departure, and a mismatch can get you refused at check-in. Tell your travel insurer early too; many policies cover emergency document fees and extra nights if the claim comes with a police report and receipts.

A realistic timeline

  • Day 1: police report, contact your consulate, block any bank cards that went missing.
  • Days 2-7: appointment and emergency document, depending on nationality.
  • Add 1-3 working days: Immigration Office.
  • Flight day: arrive early with every document, as the departure immigration check can take longer. The airport process is covered in our Ngurah Rai Airport article.

If you end up staying a few extra nights while you wait, an AccessiaPass hotel voucher in Denpasar or Jimbaran keeps costs in check and puts you close to both the consulates and Immigration.

One small habit saves days: store a photo of your passport data page and your e-VOA in email or cloud storage before you travel, not only on a phone that can go missing too.
