Yes, for most visitors the water in Bali hotels and villas is running normally as of 22 October 2026, because the drought reported by Bali's disaster agency (BPBD) is concentrated in villages in Tabanan, Buleleng, Klungkung (including Nusa Penida), Jembrana and Karangasem, not in Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua or Ubud. What has changed is that the rainy season is about a month late, so water tanker trucks will keep supplying those villages into November.
What happened this week
BPBD Bali head Gede Teja Bhusana told ANTARA (20 October 2026) and Kompas.com (21 October 2026) that drought and forest-fire reports come in "every day". BPBD, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and the provincial public works office have delivered 177,500 litres of clean water:
- Tabanan: 62,500 litres
- Buleleng: 56,000 litres
- Klungkung: 30,000 litres
- Jembrana: 24,000 litres
- Karangasem: 5,000 litres
In its weekly report for 12-18 October 2026, BPBD logged 16 incidents: 10 forest and land fires, 4 building fires and 2 strong-wind events. Karangasem had the most (6), followed by Buleleng (4). BPBD says the situation is under control with no fatalities.
This did not come out of nowhere. In mid-August 2026 Bali's regional secretary Dewa Made Indra announced water deliveries for 529 households in Sinabun (Buleleng), Pendem, Asahduren and Manistutu (Jembrana) and Baturinggit (Karangasem), as reported by ANTARA and The Bali Sun (20 August 2026).
Nusa Penida is the one to watch
According to a mid-October 2026 report by Bloomberg Technoz, Nusa Penida has been short of water since late August. The river basin authority (BWS Bali Penida), BPBD Klungkung and the local utility Perumda Panca Mahottama are trucking water from the Guyangan reservoir in 4,000-litre tankers to Pejukutan village (732 households). If you stay in a small homestay on Nusa Penida, especially on the east side, expect water to be rationed at certain hours or to run at low pressure.
When will the rain come? Two versions
BPBD Bali, citing BMKG, expects the wet season to start in November 2026, a month later than last year because of El Niño. A report by RRI (7 October 2026) quoting the regional BMKG office is more cautious: only a small part of Bali's 20 season zones get rain in November, most of them in December, with the peak in February 2027. RRI also noted the longest dry spell, 123 days, at Sumberklampok in Buleleng. For trip planning, assume November is still dry in north and east Bali.
What it means for you
- Ask about the water source before booking a rural villa. Villas in Tabanan, Buleleng, Karangasem or Nusa Penida with their own bore well are usually more reliable than those waiting on tanker deliveries. If you book through an AccessiaPass voucher, you can ask the property about this before redeeming.
- Tap water is still not for drinking, drought or not. See is Bali tap water safe to drink. If tap water looks cloudy or smells, don't brush your teeth with it.
- Use less water in dry villages. Short showers, reuse towels, don't ask for the pool to be topped up. You are drawing from the same source as the neighbours.
- Refill your bottle from the hotel's water dispenser. The plastic packaging rules are in our 2026 plastic bottle article.
- Watch for smoke and heat on trekking routes in Karangasem and Buleleng; see the October 2026 heat and wildfire smoke update and Bali rules on burning and cigarette butts.
As of our check on 22 October 2026, we found no BPBD or media report of large hotels in Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran or Ubud running dry. Sources checked: ANTARA Bali, Kompas.com, Bloomberg Technoz, RRI and The Bali Sun, checked 22 October 2026.
FAQ
Should I cancel my Bali trip because of the drought?
No. The drought affects specific villages and is being handled with tanker trucks. The main tourist areas are not on BPBD's list.
Is the water on Nusa Penida safe for showering?
Generally yes, but supply can be limited. Ask your homestay whether it has a backup tank and what hours the water runs.
When will the drought in Bali end?
When the rain arrives. BPBD expects November; the regional BMKG office says most zones only start in December 2026.
