Bali in December 2026: Weather, Surf, Ceremonies & Hotel Prices

December 2026 is the month most of Bali officially enters the rainy season. Indonesia's weather agency BMKG, through its Bali Climatology Station in comments reported by RRI on 29 September 2026, expects about 85 percent of Bali's seasonal zones to start the wet season in December, while the other 15 percent, including Banjar, Sukasada, Baturiti, Pupuan, Petang and Payangan, begin in late November. Peak rainfall for most of Bali is forecast for February 2027.

How often does it rain in December?

BMKG says the 2026/2027 wet season is late and shorter because a strong El Niño is coinciding with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole. The Bali station's forecaster warns that a shorter season tends to compress the rain, so extreme weather should be expected.

As a long-term benchmark, Denpasar averages about 290 mm of rain in December, nearly double November (Climatestotravel climate data). The usual pattern is a clear morning, clouds building by midday, then heavy rain in the afternoon or evening. Temperatures sit around 27-28°C and it feels humid.

• Schedule beaches, temples and treks for the morning.
• Waterfalls and canyons can close temporarily after heavy rain upstream; ask at the ticket counter before paying.
• Batur and Agung climbs can be cancelled in bad weather. Choose a licensed operator with a clear refund policy.
• Pack a poncho, non-slip sandals and insect repellent; dengue cases usually rise at the start of the wet season.

Which coast is better, east or west?

The north-westerly winds of the wet season usually dominate from December to March. For surfers, east-side breaks such as Keramas, the Sanur reefs and the east side of Nusa Dua tend to be cleaner, while the west side (Canggu, Kuta, Uluwatu) is more often messy except very early in the morning.

For swimming and families, Sanur and Nusa Dua stay the calmest. In Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, swim only between the lifeguards' red-and-yellow flags. Fast boats to Nusa Penida can be postponed when waves are high; check BMKG's high-wave warnings and ask about the rebooking policy before you buy.

Has the washed-up rubbish arrived?

Usually, yes. Badung's environment agency (DLHK) recorded about 40 tonnes of washed-up rubbish a day on Badung beaches in December 2025, and the peak is normally January-February. The worst spots are on the west coast: Kedonganan, Kuta and Jimbaran, then Legian through Seminyak. What holy days and ceremonies fall in December 2026?

The dates below were checked against the Balinese calendar (kalenderbali.com):

• Wednesday 9 December: Tilem Kenam (new moon). Many Balinese pray at temples and family shrines.
• Saturday 19 December: Tumpek Uduh, also called Tumpek Wariga or Tumpek Bubuh. Families make offerings to trees, especially coconut and fruit trees. It falls 25 days before Galungan.
• Wednesday 23 December: Purnama Kapitu (full moon). Temples are busy and some village roads slow down for processions.
• Tuesday 29 December: Anggar Kasih Julungwangi, the start of preparations for Galungan.

There is no Galungan in December 2026. Galungan falls on Wednesday 13 January 2027 and Kuningan on Saturday 23 January 2027. The tall penjor poles usually go up only the day before Galungan.

As for events, the Denpasar Festival usually runs for four days in late December around the Catur Muka monument and Puputan Badung square (the 2025 edition ran 20-23 December); as of early October 2026 the 2026 dates have not been announced. When is it busiest?

• Christmas: a collective leave day on Thursday 24 December plus the national holiday on Friday 25 December (joint ministerial decree) create a four-day long weekend, 24-27 December.
• School holidays: Bali's 2026/2027 school calendar sets the semester break from 21 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. Many other provinces break around the same time.
• New Year: 1 January 2027 is a Friday, so 1-3 January is another long weekend. The return rush at the airport usually peaks 2-5 January.

The Canggu-Seminyak-Kuta corridor and the roads to Uluwatu are at their worst on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Stay close to your main plans and avoid changing areas on 31 December.

How much do hotel prices rise?

There is no official figure, but the pattern repeats every year: roughly 20 December to 5 January is the most expensive stretch. Many resorts impose 3-5 night minimum stays, make a gala dinner on 24 or 31 December compulsory, and sell non-refundable rates. Add up the total including tax and service before comparing. What else should you prepare?

• Foreign visitors still pay the IDR 150,000 tourist levy per person per arrival, through the official Love Bali site or the airport counter.
• Book popular restaurants for 24 and 31 December well ahead; many sell set menus only.
• Allow extra time to reach the airport on 2-5 January.
• Keep indoor plans for the afternoons: spa, cooking class, museums in Ubud.

In short, December 2026 works best if you come in the first half of the month, stay on the east side if swimming is the priority, and keep outdoor activities for the mornings. Recheck BMKG's daily forecast the day before any important outdoor plan.
