Bali Trash Season on the Beaches: When and Which Beaches?

Marine debris usually starts washing up on Bali's west coast around November, peaks in January-February and eases off around April. According to Badung's environment and sanitation agency (DLHK), the worst-hit beaches are Kedonganan, Kuta and Jimbaran, followed by Legian, Seminyak and the Berawa-Cemagi coast. These beaches are cleaned every day, so the real question is not whether to go to Kuta, but when and which beach makes sense.

When is the trash season in Bali?

DLHK Badung says sea debris arrives every west monsoon, roughly September to March. In December 2024, the agency's marine debris coordinator said the peak is usually January, with normal conditions back by April. The 2025/2026 season followed that pattern: debris started arriving in November 2025, February 2026 was the heaviest month, and by mid-March the volume had dropped to around 50 tonnes a day.

The pattern is less tidy than it used to be. Throughout July 2026, DLHK Badung removed 1,724 tonnes of washed-up debris, the second-highest month after February. Denpasar's agency also recorded debris arriving from mid-July 2026. On 23 September 2026, DLHK Badung announced staff, trucks and heavy equipment were on standby ahead of the west monsoon.

Which beaches are hit hardest?

Every location DLHK Badung lists is on the west coast. Totals for October 2025-July 2026:

  • Kedonganan Beach: 3,842 tonnes, the most.
  • Kuta Beach: 2,514 tonnes.
  • Jimbaran Beach: 1,326 tonnes.
  • Pantai Jerman (near the airport): 794 tonnes.
  • Other points: Kelan, Batu Belig-Petitenget, Double Six Seminyak, Legian, Cemagi-Seseh, Batu Bolong-Perancak.

At the peak, DLHK splits the work into 10 zones from Petitenget to Jimbaran. In Denpasar, the biggest pile-up in August 2026 was at Padanggalak Beach (up to 4 tonnes in a day), while the Sanur-to-Biaung coast was described as under control.

How much trash are we talking about?

  • December 2025: about 40 tonnes a day across Badung's beaches.
  • Late February 2026: around 3,000 tonnes collected over almost four months.
  • The week to 12 March 2026: 360 tonnes (Kedonganan 282, Jimbaran 54, Kuta 24).
  • October 2025-July 2026 total: 9,028 tonnes.

About 70% is wood and branches, 30% plastic. DLHK says some of it comes from rivers in Java and other dense regions via ocean currents, then gets trapped in Bali's western bay. On average Bali receives 4,000-7,000 tonnes of marine debris a year, with the record in 2021.

What time are the beaches cleaned?

No official schedule is published; DLHK Badung says cleaning happens daily depending on conditions. In December 2024, detikBali saw crews sweeping Kuta Beach from the southern to the northern end from 07.00. On a normal day DLHK deploys 300-350 sweepers and 12 pieces of heavy equipment, scaling up to 800 people in extreme conditions.

So in the morning you may still see piles and loaders on the sand. Midday to late afternoon is usually tidier, but fresh debris can roll in with the waves. Do not swim near floating logs, and keep clear of working machinery.

Which beaches are usually cleaner in this season?

The east side. Nusa Dua and Geger Beach are not on DLHK Badung's list of debris points, all of which are on the west coast. Sanur Beach was also rated under control by Denpasar's agency as of August 2026, although Padanggalak at its northern end did get hit. An honest caveat: not being on the list does not mean zero trash; after heavy rain, any river mouth can bring rubbish down.

Can visitors join a clean-up?

Yes. DLHK Badung names several partner organisations, including Sungai Watch, Sobat Pantai and Eco Bali. Sungai Watch runs a public volunteer calendar with a sign-up form on sungaiwatch.com. Its focus is rivers and illegal dumps, the source of much of the trash that ends up at sea. Wear closed shoes and gloves, and leave the big logs to the crews.

So should you cancel Kuta?

No need. Sunsets and evening walks still work, and the beach is cleaned daily. But if your main plan is swimming or playing in the sand with kids in December-February, the east coast makes more sense. If your trip falls in those months, an AccessiaPass stay voucher in Sanur or Nusa Dua can give you a calmer base, and there are more ideas in our rainy season guide.

Before heading down, check recent posts tagged at the beach that same morning; conditions can change overnight with the wind and swell.
