Is the Fast Boat to Nusa Penida Safe?

Generally yes, when the sea is calm and the operator follows the rules, but the Sanur-Nusa Penida route has had several serious incidents since mid-2025, and the main cause is always the same: big waves, sometimes combined with overloading. According to the Benoa Port Authority (KSOP Class II Benoa), 72 fast boats serve this route (ANTARA, June 2025). The data below was checked in September 2026 against ANTARA, Bali Post, Denpost, Kompas and the Sanur Harbour website.

Real incidents you should know about

  • 4 June 2025: a 125-seat fast boat carrying 89 passengers (77 foreigners) capsized after being hit by a wave near the shore of Nusa Lembongan. Everyone was rescued (ANTARA).
  • 5 August 2025, around 3.15pm: Bali Dolphin Cruise 2, arriving from Nusa Penida, capsized in the entrance channel of Sanur Harbour when waves suddenly reached 2-4 metres. Two Chinese nationals and one crew member died.
  • 26 November 2025, 8.05am: the fast boat Wijaya Buyuk 1 was struck by a dive boat off Banjar Nyuh, Nusa Penida. Eight passengers were injured, four of them seriously (Denpost).
  • 4 August 2026: Denpasar District Court sentenced the captain of Bali Dolphin Cruise 2 to two years in prison. The judges found the manifest listed 75 people while 80 were aboard, exceeding the 75-person capacity, and that the boat entered the harbour before the waves had eased (Bali Post).

The rules that protect you

Every departure needs a Sailing Approval Letter (SPB) from the harbourmaster. KSOP Benoa says it can hold back SPBs during heavy rain, strong wind, high waves or storms based on BMKG weather data, and it runs regular ramp checks on the fleet. So if your crossing is cancelled for weather, the system is working; it does not mean the operator is lazy. Ask to reschedule rather than switching to another boat that insists on going.

Before you go: check the weather yourself

  • Open the Info BMKG app or the BMKG maritime website and check the wave forecast for the Badung Strait the day before.
  • BMKG treats winds above 15 knots and waves above 1.25 metres as risky for fishing boats (ANTARA). Fast boats are bigger, but those figures are a signal to be extra careful.
  • June to August is the peak of the easterly trade winds and southern swell. Both 2025 capsizes happened in June and August, and both in the afternoon.
  • If the forecast is bad and your plans are flexible, move the crossing to another day or to a morning departure.

How to choose an operator

  • Book directly through the operator's website or its official counter at Sanur Harbour, not from touts on the street.
  • Read Google and TripAdvisor reviews from the last three months. Repeated complaints about packed boats or standing passengers are a bad sign.
  • Make sure your name is on the manifest at check-in. In the Dolphin case, the manifest gap was used by the court as evidence of negligence, and rescue teams rely on the manifest to account for everyone.
  • Ask whether the ticket includes the passenger insurance levy (Jasa Raharja).
  • Be wary of prices far below the average. Fares and timetables are in our budget guide to Nusa Penida.

On board: life jackets, seats and wet luggage

  • Find the life jackets before the boat leaves and check there are child sizes. If you cannot see them, ask the crew.
  • Pick a seat near an exit and keep bags out of the aisle.
  • Suitcases and large backpacks usually go on the roof or the bow and often get splashed. Wrap them in a dry bag or plastic, and keep your passport, phone and medication in a small bag you hold yourself.
  • In an emergency, put your life jacket on before leaving the cabin and follow the crew's instructions. Indonesia's search and rescue agency (Basarnas) can be reached on 115.
  • Prone to seasickness? Take medication 30-60 minutes before departure and sit towards the back, where the motion is gentler.

Getting on and off: Sanur now has a pier

The old complaint about boarding from the sand no longer applies at Sanur. Sanur Harbour (Matahari Terbit) was inaugurated on 9 November 2022 and now has a pier and a terminal. According to its official website, it is open 6am-6pm daily except Nyepi, with the last departure to Nusa Penida and Lembongan at 5pm. On the island side, conditions vary. Many boats to Jungutbatu on Nusa Lembongan still drop passengers into calf- to knee-deep water. Wear sandals, roll up your trousers and ask where your boat lands before you buy a ticket.

First boats usually leave around 7-8am, so spending the night in Sanur saves you a pre-dawn drive through traffic from Canggu or Ubud, and an AccessiaPass hotel voucher in Sanur can cut the cost of that night. Where to stay on the islands is covered in our article on staying in Nusa Penida and Lembongan.

Also bring cash for the Nusa Penida entry levy of Rp25,000 per adult, in force since 1 September 2026; how to pay it is explained in our Nusa Penida levy article.
