Staying on Nusa Penida & Nusa Lembongan 2026: Choosing Your Area, Fast Boats, Scooter Rental & How to Save With Hotel Vouchers

Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan cannot be treated as one small town where everything is close by. Toyapakeh to Atuh alone is about 30 km of climbing, twisting road, so choosing the wrong base can cost you 2–3 hours a day on a scooter. This 2026 guide breaks down every area, the fast boat operators that genuinely run, scooter rental rates, and how to cut your room bill with a hotel voucher.

Where to Stay on Nusa Penida

  • Toyapakeh & Banjar Nyuh — the most practical choice for first-timers. Fast boats from Sanur dock at Banjar Nyuh, and within walking distance you have warungs, cafes, an ATM, a money changer and dive operators.
  • Ped — the flat, easiest-to-ride north coast strip near Pura Dalem Ped. Plenty of guesthouses and local warungs priced far below the west coast.
  • Sampalan & Batununggul — the island's administrative centre: the sub-district office, health clinic, market and the most reliable ATMs. It is the docking point for boats from Kusamba and the roro ferry from Padangbai, and the best base for the east (Diamond Beach, Atuh, Teletubbies Hill).
  • Crystal Bay & Sakti — the west side, the quietest, with the island's best snorkelling and sunsets. Accommodation here leans toward small resorts and dive resorts such as Adiwana Warnakali, at the island's highest rates.
  • Suana, Pejukutan & Atuh — the far east, extremely quiet, with spectacular cliff scenery. The trade-off: limited food options, patchy signal, and a long ride every time you want to reach Kelingking.
  • Avoid the island's centre — it looks strategic on a map, but in reality it is far from every beach.

Nusa Lembongan & Ceningan: Jungutbatu vs Mushroom Bay

  • Jungutbatu — the largest area, with restaurants, bars and surf rentals lined up along the beach. The liveliest at night and with the widest choice of cheap rooms.
  • Mushroom Bay — a smaller, calmer bay with sheltered water for swimming. Home to Hai Tide Beach Resort and The Tanis Beach Resort; good for couples and families.
  • Nusa Ceningan — reached across the Yellow Bridge, roughly 138 m long and only about 1.8 m wide, so only pedestrians, bicycles and scooters can cross. The quietest and cheapest option, but the hills are steep.

Fast Boats 2026: Harbours, Operators & Prices

  • Sanur Harbour (open roughly 06:00–18:00 WITA) is the main gateway. The Sanur–Banjar Nyuh/Toyapakeh run takes 30–45 minutes at around Rp170,000–215,000 one way; counters at the pier sometimes quote up to Rp250,000. Active operators include Maruti Express, Idola Express, Semabu Hills and Axe Stone. Caspla Bali docks at Buyuk, next to Sampalan.
  • Tribuana Kusamba Harbour is closest to Sampalan: just 25–30 minutes at around Rp150,000–210,000. Operators include Angkal Express (The Angkal), Gangga Express and Sekarjaya, with departures from early morning until about 17:00.
  • Padangbai runs the roro ferry to Mentigi Harbour in Batununggul — the only way to bring your own car or motorbike. Usually twice daily (around 10:00 and 14:00 WITA), 45–60 minutes, with foot passenger tickets at about Rp31,000.
  • To Nusa Lembongan, fast boats from Sanur take about 30 minutes for Rp150,000–250,000. Sanur–Jungutbatu is served by operators including Tanis Fast Cruise, D’Stars Fast Ferry and Arthamas Express; Sanur–Mushroom Bay by Marlin Fast Boat and Dream Beach Express.
  • Since 1 September 2026, visitors to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan–Ceningan pay a tourism levy of Rp25,000 (adults) and Rp15,000 (children) under Klungkung Regency regulation; carry small cash.

Scooter & Car Rental, Plus Road Conditions

  • Automatic scooters such as a Honda Scoopy or Vario 110–125 rent for about Rp70,000–100,000 per day; an NMAX or PCX runs about Rp150,000, and a trail bike about Rp200,000. Helmet and raincoat are usually included, fuel is not.
  • A car with driver starts at Rp600,000–800,000 per day — far more sensible for families or inexperienced riders.
  • The main north coast road (Toyapakeh–Ped–Sampalan) is smooth and flat. By contrast, access roads to Kelingking, Diamond Beach, Atuh and Crystal Bay are often narrow, steeply pitched and rocky.
  • Fill up before heading south or east; fuel stations are concentrated along the northern route.

Room Rates by Area & How to Choose a Hotel

  • Guesthouses and homestays in Ped–Sampalan: about Rp250,000–400,000 per night; simple fan rooms start around Rp100,000.
  • Mid-range hotels in Toyapakeh/Banjar Nyuh with a pool: about Rp700,000–1,500,000.
  • Resorts and dive resorts around Sakti–Crystal Bay or the Toyapakeh hills: about Rp1,500,000–4,500,000.
  • On Lembongan, Jungutbatu homestays start around Rp300,000, while beachfront resorts at Mushroom Bay typically run from Rp1,200,000 up.
  • Before booking, check three things: the real distance to your arrival harbour, whether there is hot water and a generator since power cuts happen, and whether harbour transfers are provided.

Staying on two islands means paying for rooms twice, and that is exactly where the price gap bites. Book an AccessiaPass hotel voucher for the area you have chosen — Toyapakeh, Sampalan, Crystal Bay or Jungutbatu — and lock in your rate before peak season pushes it up.
