Puri Lumbung Cottages, Munduk: Sleeping in a Balinese Rice Barn

Long before Munduk filled up with cloud-view cafes, Puri Lumbung Cottages had already opened its doors. Started by I Nyoman Bagiarta in the early 1990s, it is one of the pioneers of village tourism in north Bali: rice-barn style cottages standing among coffee and clove gardens at roughly 800 metres above sea level, facing terraced fields that tumble down toward the northern coastline.

Access, Best Time, and Cost

• Around 80 km from Ngurah Rai Airport, 2.5–3 hours via Bedugul. The final stretch is tight and full of switchbacks, so avoid driving at night and pack motion-sickness tablets.
• Best from April to October. Mornings are clearest, before mist rises in the afternoon.
• Room rates range from a few hundred thousand rupiah to roughly IDR 1.5 million per night, depending on cottage type and season.
