Bukit Nampo, Karangasem: Sunrise Route from Candidasa

Bukit Nampo sits in Banjar Tanahampo, Jungutan village, Bebandem district, about 15 km from Amlapura (30-40 minutes by road) at roughly 800 m above sea level. Entry was reported at IDR 15,000-20,000 per person, and camping with your own tent at IDR 25,000-35,000 per person in 2023-2025 coverage, so bring cash and confirm the current price at the gate (checked September 2026). On maps and social media it is often listed as Bukit Surga.

The hill began as farmland with a guard hut used to keep monkeys off the crops, opened officially as a tourist site in 2016 and is run by Jungutan villagers. The most recent media coverage we found dates from November 2025.

Pre-dawn route from Candidasa

  • 04:30 leave Candidasa. It is about 28 km via Amlapura, roughly 1 hour by scooter or car. From Amed or Tulamben allow more time, since you first drive down to Amlapura.
  • 05:20 reach Bebandem. Look for SMPN 1 Bebandem (a junior high school) and follow the uphill road to Jungutan. Ignore Google Maps' shortcut through Sibetan: local guides describe it as too steep and prone to vehicles slipping off.
  • 05:35 park and pay. Vehicles can drive up to the operator's area, so there is no long hike; the rest is a few minutes on foot to the viewpoints. Bring a torch.
  • around 06:00 sunrise in October. The sky colours 20-30 minutes earlier, so arriving 10 minutes late still catches the best light.
  • 07:00 head down. Jagasatru Waterfall and the salak plantations of Sibetan village are on the way.

Camp overnight or just come for sunrise?

The hilltop is open 24 hours because people camp here. The operator rents tents; full packages were listed from IDR 175,000 in 2023. Camping means you see Amlapura's lights at night and skip the steep drive in the dark. The downsides: basic facilities (toilets and a small warung) and weekend crowds of young local visitors. If you would rather sleep in a real bed nearby, an AccessiaPass stay voucher for a Candidasa hotel works as a base for the pre-dawn schedule above.

What tends to disappoint

  • Mount Agung is often hidden by cloud, especially in the November-March wet season. The sea view to the southeast usually stays clear.
  • The final stretch is steep and winding. A small automatic scooter carrying two people will struggle; check your brakes and tyres.
  • Not ideal if you want solitude at weekends or proper facilities. Come on a weekday for a quieter hill.
  • For a similar panorama without camping, try Bukit Putung, about 30 minutes west.

Location, tickets, contact

If mist rolls in as you arrive, give it 20-30 minutes before giving up: local media have reported that the hill sometimes sits above a layer of cloud in the early morning.
