Amandari sits in Kedewatan village, about 10 minutes from central Ubud, right on the lip of the Ayung River gorge. It opened in 1989 as the first Aman resort in Bali and only the second Aman in the world, after Amanpuri in Phuket.
Why Amandari Is Still Called Legendary
Architect Peter Muller did not build a hotel; he reproduced the layout of a Balinese village, with paras stone lanes, walled compounds, gateways and free-standing pavilions under alang-alang thatch.
- Small scale: just 30 suites, pavilions and villas across a large site, so you rarely cross paths with other guests.
- The famous pool: an emerald green infinity pool shaped like a rice paddy, roughly 30 metres long, widely called Bali’s first infinity pool.
- Cultural setting: Pura Dalem Kedewatan is right next door; the resort is woven into village life rather than fenced off from it.
Suites, Villas and Private Pools
- Garden and Valley Pavilions (about 250 sq m), no private pool, the most affordable choice.
- Garden Pool Pavilion and Ayung Pool Villa (about 265 sq m) with their own swimming pool.
- Asmara and Duplex Pool Villas (350 to 465 sq m) on two levels for honeymooners, plus one to three-bedroom villas (450 to 700 sq m) for families. Around a third of the accommodation has a private pool.
Activities, Rates and Alternatives Around Kedewatan
Signature experiences include the descent into the Ayung River valley, Balinese cooking classes, wood carving, a melukat water blessing at Tirta Empul, yoga, tennis and archery. In the late afternoon, children from Kedewatan village often dance and play gamelan on the resort grounds.
- Price range: from around USD 1,000 per night for a pavilion, rising to USD 1,500 to 1,700 and above for pool villas; rates usually include breakfast and airport transfers.
- Best for: honeymoons, milestone anniversaries, and travellers who want total privacy.
- Cheaper options on the same ridge: Puri Wulandari and Kupu Kupu Barong in Kedewatan, or Wapa di Ume Sayan, roughly IDR 2 to 6 million per night.
