Pengempu Waterfall, Tabanan: Ticket, Route, Can You Swim?

Pengempu Waterfall in Banjar Seribupati, Cau Belayu village, Marga district, charged Rp30,000 per person as of January 2026 according to NusaBali. The 41-metre waterfall is about 21-25 km from Denpasar and reached via roughly 150 steps.

How much is the ticket now?

Since mid-2025 Pengempu has been run by the Cau Belayu village enterprise (BUMDes Utsaha Sedana Artha). In June 2025 the fee was Rp10,000 for Indonesian visitors and Rp20,000 for foreigners; in January 2026 NusaBali reported Rp30,000 per person, with a third shared with the guide or driver who brings guests. Older blogs that say "donation only" and Rp2,000 parking are out of date. Price checked September 2026 against the latest report; bring cash.

How do you get there?

From Denpasar it is about a 40-45 minute drive north via Sempidi-Mengwi towards Marga; from the airport roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. There is parking by the village road, tidied up in 2025, but space is tight at weekends. From the car park you walk down about 150 concrete steps with iron railings. Coming back up is harder than going down.

Can you swim?

In normal conditions, yes: below the fall is a shallow natural pool and the flow is not very strong. However, a flash flood in late December 2025 swept away logs, bamboo and a decorative bamboo bridge at the base, and staff only cleared it in January 2026. In the rainy season, stay out of the water if it is brown or after heavy rain upstream.

When is it quietest?

It opens roughly 08:00-17:00. Visitor numbers are low anyway: the village head cited 20-25 people a day in mid-2025 and 10-15 a day after the flood. 08:00-10:00 is best, while the gorge is still shaded and the stairs are empty.

What are the downsides?

  • No warung at the bottom; bring your own water.
  • The steps are slippery in the rain and not suitable for wheelchairs or bad knees.
  • Late in the dry season the flow thins out. If you want a powerful waterfall, this is not it.
  • Older sources mention a cave of about 30 metres near the fall; ask staff whether it is still open and bring a torch.

What can you combine it with?

Pengempu is in the same district as Alas Kedaton, a monkey forest with a fruit-bat colony in Kukuh, and the Margarana Monument, a 17-metre memorial to the Puputan Margarana battle. All three fit into half a day.

Pack dry clothes in a waterproof bag and wear strapped footwear: the hardest part of Pengempu is not the descent but the 150 steps back up in wet clothes.
