Five kilometres south of Semarapura, a line of black volcanic sand stretches out, empty for most of the year. Locals call it Pantai Klotok; some maps write it as Pantai Watu Klotok. Once a year, just before Nyepi, the beach turns into a sea of parasols and ceremonial banners.
The stage for Klungkung's Melasti
At the water's edge stands Pura Watu Klotok, one of the most important sea temples in east Bali. Groups from temples all over Klungkung come down here for Melasti, and during Panca Wali Krama even the sacred effigies of Pura Agung Besakih are carried to this shore. The name klotok is said to come from beach stones that rattle when you shake them.
What it feels like on an ordinary day
- Sunrise with almost nobody around; arrive between 05.30 and 06.30 WITA for the best sky.
- Long, powerful waves that appeal to surfers but make casual swimming dangerous.
- Simple warung selling coffee, instant noodles, and coconut ice, usually Rp10,000–25,000.
- Basic facilities: a large car park, public toilets, gazebos, and a prayer room.
Combine it into one route
The beach works well as either the opening or the closing stop of the day. Kerta Gosa and the Semarajaya Museum are only about 10 minutes north, while Pura Goa Lawah with its bat colony is roughly 20 minutes east via the Kusamba road. Half a day is enough for all three.
