Bali Buda Ubud: Ubud’s Original Organic Cafe & Health Food Store

One Ubud address has been a morning ritual for expats, yogis and travellers since 1994: Bali Buda on Jl. Jembawan, directly across from the Ubud post office. The building is easy to spot, and the open-air dining room upstairs catches the afternoon breeze. This is more than a cafe — Bali Buda is a health kitchen, bakery and organic grocery in one, and it helped make Ubud the health-food capital of Bali.

Signature Dishes to Try

The kitchen cooks without MSG, using local organic produce, free-range eggs and coconut oil. The menu is huge: all-day breakfast, Indonesian classics, Italian dishes and raw vegan plates.

  • Whole-wheat pizza with a thin, nutty wholegrain base — around Rp75,000–120,000.
  • Sourdough bread, naturally fermented and preservative-free, the most sought-after loaf here — around Rp45,000–75,000.
  • Vegetarian nasi goreng and the tempeh burger for a filling plate — around Rp55,000–90,000.
  • Fresh juices & smoothie bowls, from ginger-turmeric shots to cacao smoothies — around Rp35,000–60,000.
  • Raw chocolate pudding pie and cinnamon rolls from the bakery counter — around Rp30,000–55,000.

The Organic Store Is Just as Good

The shop section (Buda Mart) stocks granola, kombucha, raw honey, local cheese, natural soap and organic vegetables from farmers around Ubud. Plenty of guests drop in purely to take home bread and breakfast supplies for their villa stay.

Atmosphere & Visitor Tips

  • Arrive early (roughly 07:30–09:00) if you want the full sourdough and pastry selection — popular items often sell out by midday.
  • Almost every dish has a vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free version; staff are used to adapting orders.
  • Scooter parking is easy out front, but cars are better left near the post office as Jl. Jembawan is narrow.
  • Reliable Wi-Fi and long communal tables upstairs make it a favourite for relaxed morning work sessions.
