Before Visiting Nyoman Rai Srimben's House, Soekarno's Mother

The ancestral house of Nyoman Rai Srimben, mother of Soekarno, stands at Jalan Gunung Batur No. 24, Paket Agung, Singaraja, and charges no entry fee. It is a provincial-level heritage site and part of the Soekarno Heritage Area. It is, however, a family home still cared for by descendants of her sibling, not a museum with a ticket counter.

Six things you should know

• Give notice first. detikBali (18 May 2026) reports that the house is not open to the public and visitors must give notice in advance. Kompas (August 2024) says visitors can come any day. Follow the stricter version and get in touch first, for example through the local kelurahan office or the Buleleng culture office.
• Who shows you around. Usually Jro Mangku Made Arsana greets visitors and tells Srimben's life story. If nobody is available, your visit may not go beyond the front yard.
• There is a place of worship. Inside is the family shrine area. Dress modestly and do not enter it without permission.
• Avoid holidays and ceremony days. This advice comes from Kompas, since the family and priest may be busy with rituals.
• Know the story before you go. Srimben was the daughter of Nyoman Pasek and Ni Made Liran, from the Bali Aga community. She married Soekemi Sosrodihardjo, a teacher at a people's school in Singaraja, and had Soekarmini and Kusno, later known as Bung Karno.
• It is a short stop. The compound is small: a yard, a Balinese-style house and an open wooden pavilion presenting her life. Thirty to forty-five minutes is enough, so plan other stops nearby.

What to combine it with

In one morning in central Singaraja you can continue to Gedong Kirtya and Museum Buleleng, then have lunch at Siobak Khe Lok. All three are close to Paket Agung.
