Museum Buleleng, Singaraja: 5 North Bali Collection Rooms Inside a Former Palace

Most travellers drive through Singaraja only to reach the dolphins of Lovina, yet at Jalan Veteran No. 23 stands a small museum that sums up the whole story of North Bali. Museum Buleleng sits inside the Pura Seni Sasana Budaya grounds, the compound of the former Puri Agung Buleleng palace. It was inaugurated on 21 December 2001 and opened to the public on 30 March 2002, on the initiative of the North Bali Cultural Heritage Preservation Foundation.

Five Collection Rooms to Walk Through

  • Prehistory Room — stone sarcophagi and archaeological finds from Bali’s northern coast.
  • History Room — traces of the Buleleng kingdom through to the colonial era in Singaraja.
  • Ethnography Room — farming implements and fishing gear that sustained North Balinese life.
  • Craft Room — woven textiles, gold and silver work, statues and traditional weapons including the kris.
  • Panji Sakti Room — heirlooms of the family of Ki Gusti Anglurah Panji Sakti, founder of Buleleng; the painting of Ki Barak Panji Sakti is the museum’s highlight piece.

Getting There from Lovina, Denpasar and Ubud

  • From Lovina it is only about 10–12 km, a 20–30 minute drive.
  • From Denpasar allow roughly 2.5–3 hours via Bedugul; from Ubud roughly 2.5–3 hours via Kintamani.
  • There is a parking yard inside the compound, and Gedong Kirtya at Jl. Veteran No. 20 is right next door — both museums fit into one morning.

Best Timing and What to Bring

  • Come early, around 08.00–10.00, while the rooms are still cool and staff have time to guide you.
  • Carry small cash for the guest book or a voluntary donation, plus a water bottle — Singaraja is hot.
  • Dress modestly; some labels are very brief, so ask the museum guide to explain.

Museum Buleleng is not a grand institution, but it is exactly where North Bali tells its story without queues. An hour across its five rooms makes Pura Beji Sangsit, Gedong Kirtya and even Lovina’s black sand make far more sense.
