Yes, book ahead: Kawi Ubud has only 15 seats, and both NOW! Bali (February 2026) and Revasi advise calling first. This small bar on Jl. Raya Lungsiakan, Kedewatan, builds cocktails from Balinese kitchen ingredients and local arak, well away from the crowds of Jl. Monkey Forest.
What is it like?
The room is dark, minimal and cave-like, with a central bar and a few tables facing a softly lit garden. The bartenders are local, and jars of spirits infused with local produce line the back bar. Revasi names the founders as three friends, Christian, Kong and Elaine. The sign is small and easy to miss from the road.
What are the opening hours?
NOW! Bali and Revasi (2026) list Wednesday to Sunday, 7pm-midnight, while the bar list on Pinstripe's blog says daily. Treat Monday and Tuesday as closed until you check directly. With so few seats, Friday and Saturday after dinner are the hardest nights to walk in.
How much are the drinks?
The menu on the Secondz directory lists signature cocktails at IDR 100-150k, for example Teh at IDR 100k and Beras at IDR 150k. Bacaribali (January 2026) estimates an average spend of around IDR 400k++ per person. The directory menu is undated, so treat it as a range (checked October 2026).
What should you order?
Drinks are named after their main ingredient. Pisang uses Tejakula arak and Balinese vanilla, Beras uses spiced rice milk and fermented tape, Teh is an Old Fashioned-style drink built on tea, and Daun Kayu Manis is a highball inspired by a cinnamon herbal remedy. Several reviews also mention a warm chocolate cocktail that suits Ubud's cool evenings. There is natural wine and a short snack list too.
Do you need a booking, is there a dress code, and what is the age limit?
Call the number on its Google Maps listing or send an Instagram DM, especially for Friday-Saturday or groups of more than four. No dress code is published; neat casual clothes are fine. The legal age to buy alcohol in Indonesia is 21, so bring a passport or ID (see Bali's drinking age rules).
Are there special events?
Guest bartender collaborations happen now and then. One example was Laut x Kawi Ubud on 31 May 2026 during the Ubud Food Festival, with free entry and a cash bar. These are not on a fixed schedule, so watch its Instagram.
Who might not enjoy it?
Big groups who want to talk loudly, people looking for live music, and anyone planning a bar crawl on foot. Kawi is in Kedewatan, about 10-15 minutes' drive from central Ubud, so you cannot walk to it from the bars on Jl. Goutama. For botanical cocktails in the town centre, Night Rooster is easier.
How do you get home safely?
The Lungsiakan-Kedewatan road is narrow, dark and winding near the Ayung valley, and the arak cocktails here are fairly strong. Book a Gojek or Grab from the door or ask your villa to collect you, and do not ride a scooter after two drinks.
