Goa Jepang Banjarangkan: Worth a Stop on the Way to Klungkung?

The Japanese Cave (Goa Jepang) at Banjar Koripan, Banjarangkan village, costs nothing to visit and needs only 15-30 minutes, but in 2026 the site has almost no management: the rest-area café is closed, there are no guides and few visitors. It sits beside the Gianyar-Klungkung main road, less than 5 km west of Semarapura town, so it works best as a short stop before Kerta Gosa.

What you can see

The site is a reddish-brown earth cliff beside the Bubuh River, cut with a row of tunnels dug during the Japanese occupation. Visitbali.id and GustiBali say there are 16 openings, 14 of them connected, each about 4 metres deep and 2 metres high. Both sources give the years 1941-1942, but Japanese troops only landed in Bali in February 1942, so treat the caves as dating from the 1942-1945 occupation.

A large elephant statue stands at the rest-area entrance, and there is a small shrine near the caves. The "Cagar Budaya Goa Jepang" (heritage site) sign is still up, though detikBali (10 May 2026) noted that the two caves managed by the customary village are said not to be on the heritage register. The area once also housed the Sukanta Wahyu sculpture museum, which faded after the sculptor died.

Condition in 2026

When detikBali visited on 9 May 2026, the rest area and two caves had been run by the Koripan Tengah customary village for about 1.5 years, but its village-owned café, "Shree Luwih Resto", had closed because it could not pay staff. What remains: a children's play area, gazebos, photo spots, toilets and a PLN electric-vehicle charging point. The deputy village head said landslides had happened several times and residents clean the footpath themselves.

There are efforts to revive it. On 15 August 2026, Banjarangkan village made the rest area the finish line of an Independence Day fun walk, with 1,000 free portions of nasi jinggo (detikBali). So you can visit, but don't expect a ticket booth, history panels or an open warung.

Drawbacks to know

  • The tunnels are dark and damp, with no lights and no guide. Bring a torch and don't go deep after rain, given the landslide history.
  • Nothing is sold here, food or drink. It is very quiet, and some locals call it haunted.
  • The cave section is not wheelchair accessible and not suitable for small children without supervision.
  • If you want a war museum with proper explanations, this will disappoint.

Getting there and what to bring

  • Location: Banjar Koripan, Banjarangkan village, Klungkung. View on Google Maps.
  • Travel time: about 1 hour from Sanur, on the same route as Kerta Gosa, Tihingan village and Goa Lawah Temple.
  • Tickets and hours: visitbali.id says there is no entry fee, and as of October 2026 we found no official fee or opening hours. Come in the morning or early afternoon while it is light.
  • Parking: in the rest area or on the road shoulder. Cross carefully; this main road carries a lot of trucks and buses.
  • Booking: not needed. There is no official account; search Instagram for recent visitor photos.
  • Dress: modestly, as there is a shrine in the cave area.

If your route continues to Sidemen or Candidasa and you need a bed for the night, you can check East Bali hotel vouchers on AccessiaPass.

Before you go: questions

Can I go inside the caves? No ban has been announced, but with no management the risk is yours. The cave mouths are enough to see the tunnel shape and take photos.

Is it worth a dedicated trip? No. Treat it as a 15-30 minute break between Gianyar and Semarapura.

Checked on 29 October 2026 against detikBali (10 May and 15 August 2026), visitbali.id and GustiBali.
