If you are still learning to stand up or want waves without a queue, choose Yeh Sumbul. If you can already turn and want a long left, choose Medewi. The two beaches are only about 1 km apart on the Jembrana coast, a 10-15 minute walk along the black sand.
Two different kinds of wave
Medewi is a left point break over a boulder bottom. According to the Padang Padang Surf Camp guide, on a good day rides can run more than 800 m, soft and long, which is why longboarders love it. It is best shaped at high tide. At low tide rocks appear and the entry and exit get slippery and covered in barnacles, so booties are recommended. More detail is in our Medewi beach review.
Yeh Sumbul is a beach break with many peaks, lefts and rights, over sand mixed with cobblestones. According to the same surf guide, it is usually a little smaller than Medewi and works best at mid tide. On small days it is beginner-friendly. On a big south or south-west swell it can turn into a heavy barrel for experts only. The beach has also hosted selection rounds for the Indonesian Surfing League, according to Info Jembrana.
Drawbacks of each
- Yeh Sumbul: the nearby river mouth flushes plastic and waste after rain, so stay out of the water the day after heavy rain, especially November-March. Facilities are basic: you park on the concrete path by the beach and there are few warungs.
- Medewi: not for complete beginners, since you paddle in and out over rocks. The line-up is also busier than Yeh Sumbul, though still far more relaxed than Canggu.
- Both: these are open Indian Ocean beaches without a sheltered bay. We found no information on a lifeguard post at Yeh Sumbul. For casual swimming or small children, neither is a good choice. Read our beach safety and rip current guide first.
When to go
The dry season, April-October, brings regular south-west swells. March-May and October-November usually have lighter winds. Go early, before the trade winds blow onshore. At Yeh Sumbul, mid tide is safest for beginners. At Medewi, wait for the tide to come in.
Getting there and where to stay
- Location: Jalan Pantai Bahari, Yeh Sumbul village, Mendoyo, about 3 hours from Denpasar on the Denpasar-Gilimanuk road. View on Google Maps
- Cost: we found no official entry fee at Yeh Sumbul (checked September 2026). Board hire and coaching are easier to find at Medewi, then walk over to Yeh Sumbul.
- Where to stay: there is beachfront lodging at Yeh Sumbul and several surf camps at Medewi. For hotels around Medewi and Pekutatan, you can check stay vouchers on AccessiaPass.
- Latest conditions: search Instagram.
The verdict: beginners and regular-footers who want empty peaks go to Yeh Sumbul on small days; intermediates and longboarders go to Medewi on a rising tide. If unsure, stay between the two and check both each morning.
