Besakih Temple: A Pilgrimage to the Mother of All Temples on Mount Agung

Standing at around 1,000 metres on the southern slope of Mount Agung, in Besakih Village, Rendang District, Besakih Temple is known as Pura Besakih Agung — the mother of all temples in Bali. It is not a single building but a chain of 23 temples arranged along a rising axis, with Pura Penataran Agung at its heart. Tiered stone stairways, multi-roofed meru shrines, and the volcanic backdrop make the place feel grand yet deeply calm.

A Vast Complex That Climbs Uphill

From the lower courtyard, flights of steps lead you through a split gateway (candi bentar) onto ever-higher terraces. On ordinary days it is peaceful; during ceremonies such as Bhatara Turun Kabeh around the tenth full moon, thousands of worshippers in white fill the courtyards. Allow 1.5–2 hours to wander the complex at ease, as the air is cool and the path climbs.

Tickets, the New Area, and Guides

Since the area was redeveloped, visitors now park in a new lot and take an electric shuttle or walk to the temple gate. No official 2025-2026 rate has been published; the last official figures (2023, announced by the tourism minister, via detikBali and Antara) are Rp60,000 for foreign visitors and Rp30,000 for Indonesians, including sarong and a local guide, with the electric shuttle at Rp30,000 (foreign) or Rp20,000 (domestic) one way. Check the price board at the counter (checked 21 October 2026). Hiring a local guide is highly recommended: they explain the meaning of each temple, keep you out of areas reserved for worshippers, and prevent misunderstandings. Come early (it opens around 07:00) before the mist rolls in and the crowds arrive.

Etiquette and Preparation

  • Dress: a sarong and sash are required; shoulders must be covered.
  • Restrictions: menstruating women may not enter; do not stand higher than the priest during ceremonies.
  • Bring: drinking water, comfortable footwear, and cash for tickets and guide donations.
