Tanah Lot is one of Bali's most famous sea temples, rising dramatically atop a large rock formation off the coast of Beraban Village, Kediri District, Tabanan—about a 45–60 minute drive west of Seminyak. At high tide the rock is cut off from the mainland and the temple appears to float on the sea, making it one of the island's most iconic sunset backdrops.
History & Spiritual Significance
The temple is believed to have been founded in the 16th century by the priest Dang Hyang Nirartha as a place to worship the guardian deities of the sea. A cave at the foot of the rock houses sacred sea snakes (banded sea kraits) that, according to local belief, protect the temple from evil spirits and intruders. Nearby flows holy water (tirta), often used by visitors for a brief blessing by a priest—offer a small donation. At low tide you can walk close to the base of the rock, though climbing up to the main temple is reserved for worshippers.
Best Time & Visitor Tips
Come in the late afternoon, around 4:30–6:30 PM, for the sunset—the most spectacular moment when the sky turns orange behind the temple's silhouette. Weekends and holiday season are very crowded, so arrive early for parking and the best photo spots.
- Wear comfortable footwear; the path to the rock is rocky and slippery when wet.
- Check the tide schedule—at low tide you can get closer to the rock.
- The entrance area is lined with souvenir stalls, cafés, and coffee shops with sea views.
- Bring small cash for the holy-water donation and parking.
