Pura Taman Pecampuhan Sala, Bangli: A Quiet Melukat at a River Fork

Pura Taman Pecampuhan in Banjar Sala, Abuan village, Susut district, is a melukat (water purification) site at the bottom of a valley, about 4.5 km west of Bangli town and roughly 40 km from Denpasar. The water comes from nine spouts and two small waterfalls where two rivers meet; locals call them Grojogan Pesiraman Dedari and Grojogan Pesiraman Tan Hana.

What you do here

The sequence described by Budaya Bali (2023): pray at the shrine at the front, bathe at the confluence, move on to the two waterfalls, then to the seven spouts (ring the bell three times before entering), and finish by praying at the temple. First-time visitors are expected to bring a banten pejati offering, plus canang sari for each point. On the way down there is a dragon head carved into the limestone cliff, its tail leading to the pool.

Verdict

The upside is obvious: far quieter than Tirta Empul, and it still feels like the villagers' place. The downsides are real too. The path drops down the valley side, gets slippery after rain, and is hard going for older visitors or wheelchair users. Public information is thin: a 2024 STIAMI community-service study noted there was no visitor levy yet, too few staff, and weak social media promotion. The newest sources we found date from 2023-2024, so conditions in 2026 are unconfirmed.

• Cost: no ticket as of 2024. Bring a donation and offerings, which you can buy at Bangli market.
• Busy days: Purnama (full moon), Tilem (new moon), Kajeng Kliwon and Banyu Pinaruh. Avoid them if you want it quiet.
• Bring: sarong, sash, a change of clothes, and a bag for wet things.
