Most travellers who stop in Semarapura visit Kerta Gosa, then head straight for the harbour to Nusa Penida. Yet immediately east of that complex stands the Semarapura Thematic Tourism Market — long known as Pasar Seni Klungkung — reopened on 31 October 2023 after a roughly Rp64.7 billion renovation. The result is an air-conditioned textile market with lifts and escalators, but prices that are still very much traditional-market.
What Each Floor Sells
- Ground floor: the cloth heart of the market — handwoven and stamped endek, songket, rangrang, cepuk, kebaya, Balinese ceremonial dress, udeng headcloths and full ritual outfits.
- Second floor: gold and silver jewellery plus assorted accessories.
- Block E, second floor: a restaurant-style food court, clean and spacious, at street-food prices.
Realistic Prices and How to Bargain
- Cotton endek runs roughly Rp35,000–200,000; bought by the metre it is usually Rp100,000–200,000.
- Genuine handwoven endek can reach several million rupiah, while stamped endek is far cheaper — always ask how a piece was made before you bargain.
- Songket starts at around Rp1 million to Rp2 million, depending on the density of the gold thread.
- Tipat serombotan at the food court costs just Rp7,000–15,000 a portion.
Getting There and the Best Hours
Semarapura is about 40 km from Denpasar or Sanur via Jalan Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra — roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car, and an hour from Ubud. The market comes alive from 05:00, but the cloth traders are at their fullest from morning to midday, while the food stalls generally serve from about 08:00 to 16:00. Saturday and Sunday are busiest. There is ticketed parking, a children's play area and Wi-Fi seating. Bring cash, since many small traders still do not take cards, and leave time to walk over to Kerta Gosa.
