Soan Galuh Beach, Tabanan: 7 Things Before the Batu Bolong Cave

Soan Galuh Beach in Banjar Bonian, Antap village, Selemadeg, Tabanan, is free to enter and has no ticket booth (per IDN Times, 2024; no new fee had been reported as of an October 2026 check). The draw is a rock tunnel roughly 15 metres long that locals call Batu Bolong, plus a row of mushroom-shaped rocks. You can only reach either one at low tide, and that is the detail most visitors miss.

Seven things to know before you go

  • Check the tide table. Google reviewers repeat the same warning: the cave and the mushroom rocks sit on the left (east) end of the beach, and when the water comes in you can get cut off behind the rocks. Tides shift every day, and many people only get into the tunnel close to sunset. Use a tide app set to "Balian" or "Tabanan".
  • Do not swim. The sand is black volcanic grit, the surf is heavy and the bottom is rocky. Local surfers ride it; for a dip, pick another beach.
  • The turn-off is easy to miss. From the Denpasar-Gilimanuk main road, follow the lane towards Pura Soan Galuh, which is the shortest way down. A mid-2024 review described the access road as badly broken and not properly paved, so a scooter beats a car.
  • Travel time. About 1.5 to 2 hours from Denpasar, depending on traffic on the Gilimanuk road. Balian Beach is roughly 1 km west, Pura Luhur Srijong about 3 km east.
  • Basic parking and facilities. No official parking fee is published. Older sources mention a toilet, gazebos and one warung, while an early-2024 review said nobody was selling anything. Bring your own water and snacks.
  • When it is quiet. Almost always. On weekday afternoons you mostly share it with fishermen and a few villagers. Weekend afternoons draw a few more people chasing the cave photo.
  • Leave before dark. There is no lighting, waves can reach the top of the beach, and camping is discouraged. Get out of the rock tunnel before the sun is fully down.

The downsides

This is not a beach for a lazy full day. The strip of sand is narrow, the rocks are slippery and sharp, and without low tide you are looking at an ordinary black-sand beach. It does not work for wheelchairs or strollers, and small children need close supervision near the rocks. Wear sport sandals, not flip-flops.

Hours, fees, location

If you are already in Selemadeg, pair it with Balian Beach or Pura Luhur Srijong, and time your arrival for about an hour before that afternoon's lowest tide.
