Desa Wisata Tista in Kerambitan district, Tabanan, is the answer for anyone tired of queueing for photos at Penglipuran or Jatiluwih. The village was designated a tourism village back in 2016 and in 2024 made the top 300 of the Indonesian Tourism Village Award (ADWI). Even so, it still feels like a real village: open rice fields, running water, and locals who greet you first.
Rice Fields, the Yeh Ho, and Early Mornings
Tista is dominated by rice fields and crossed by the Yeh Ho River. The paddy dykes double as a jogging track and a cycling route, so you can walk through hectares of green without the ticket queues of Bali’s commercial rice-field attractions. Early morning is the best time, when thin mist still hangs and farmers head out to the fields.
Tari Andir, a Sacred Legacy Still Alive
Tista’s main draw is not an iconic building but Tari Andir — a sacred dance unique to the village, performed during piodalan temple anniversaries. Because it follows the ceremonial calendar, it is not staged daily. Ask the village management for the schedule well in advance if you hope to see it, and come as a guest rather than an audience member.
