Karang Boma Cliff, Uluwatu: Pecatu's Quietest Sunset Clifftop

At the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, roughly a 10-minute drive from Pura Luhur Uluwatu, sits a headland that rarely makes group-tour itineraries: Karang Boma Cliff in Pecatu village — locals call it Tanjung Mebulu. Its limestone wall juts into the Indian Ocean and reveals the whole curving coastline from above, a favourite with sunset photographers minus the Uluwatu crowds.

Not just another Uluwatu

• Almost 180-degree views over open ocean and the cliff line running toward Nyang Nyang Beach.
• No formal management: no ticket booth, no safety railing, no lighting.
• The name comes from a small temple in the area, so dress and behave respectfully.

Route and road conditions

Allow 60–90 minutes driving from Kuta or Seminyak, and about two hours from Ubud. Set GPS to Karang Boma Cliff, take the road toward Nyang Nyang Beach, then turn onto Jalan Batu Lesung. Signage is almost non-existent. The asphalt gives way to a rocky dirt track: scooters can push further in, cars are better parked earlier on village land. From there it is a 5–15 minute walk through scrub before the cliff opens up.

Best time and what to bring

• Arrive around 5pm for sunset, or before 9am when the wind is calmer.
• Wear rubber-soled shoes: dry grass and limestone get slippery, especially after rain.
• Bring water, a hat, small cash and a torch for the walk back in the dark.
• The cliff edge is crumbly, unfenced and very windy — never sit on the lip, and watch children closely.
• Wild monkeys roam the scrub; secure sunglasses, food and phones.
