Klungkung Travel Guide 2026: Kerta Gosa, Goa Lawah, Tukad Unda, Nusa Penida & Smart Hotel Voucher Savings

Most visitors only pass through Klungkung on the way to Padangbai or the Nusa Penida ferry piers. Yet Bali’s smallest regency holds a former royal court complex, the island’s most famous painted ceiling, a bat-cave temple, a photogenic tiered dam and craft villages still working every day. Here is a practical guide to exploring Klungkung in 2026, with opening hours, ticket ranges and a half-day route.

Kerta Gosa, Taman Gili & Semarajaya Museum

At the heart of Semarapura town stands Kerta Gosa, the former court of justice of the Klungkung kingdom. Its highlight is the pavilion ceiling covered in Kamasan-style paintings depicting karma and punishment — a moral lesson aimed at the defendants seated below. Beside it, Taman Gili is a floating pavilion ringed by a lotus moat.

  • Opening hours: daily, roughly 08:00–17:00 WITA.
  • Tickets: around IDR 25,000 for domestic adults and IDR 15,000 for children; around IDR 50,000 for foreign adults and IDR 25,000 for children. The ticket usually includes a loaned sarong and sash plus entry to the Semarajaya Museum in the same complex.
  • The Semarajaya Museum displays ethnographic collections, traditional Kusamba salt-making tools and documentation of the 1908 Puputan Klungkung.
  • The Puputan Klungkung Monument stands directly opposite on the town square. The 28-metre tower is normally open from midday to late afternoon and free to enter.

Pura Goa Lawah & Tukad Unda

  • Pura Goa Lawah in Pesinggahan village, Dawan district, sits right beside the main road toward Padangbai and Candidasa. Thousands of bats roost in its cave mouth, and it counts among Bali’s important Sad Kahyangan temples. Hours are roughly 08:00–18:00 WITA; tickets run about IDR 15,000 for domestic and IDR 25,000 for foreign visitors, plus IDR 2,000–5,000 parking. Sarong and sash are compulsory, and customary rules bar menstruating visitors from entering. Google Maps
  • Tukad Unda, the Unda dam in Banjar Lebah, Semarapura Kelod Kangin, is a stepped weir that creates a river-wide curtain of water. It is a favourite photo stop, best in the early morning when the light is soft and crowds are thin. Entry is usually free or by donation, with only a small parking fee. The rainy season brings dramatic volume but murky water; the dry season is clearer and safer for walking down to the bank. Google Maps

Kamasan Village, Tihingan Village & the Japanese Caves

  • Kamasan village, about three kilometres south of Semarapura, is the source of the painting style you see on the Kerta Gosa ceiling. Family studios still paint wayang figures on canvas and hide, and the same village is known for Chinese-coin (pis bolong) and silver craftsmen. Studios generally open around 09:00–17:00; small paintings start in the low hundreds of thousands of rupiah, with major works far higher. Google Maps
  • Tihingan village, west of Semarapura, is Bali’s gamelan foundry centre. Come in the morning to hear bronze keys being forged and tuned, and always ask before photographing inside a family workshop. Google Maps
  • Goa Jepang Klungkung is a row of defensive tunnels carved into a volcanic breccia cliff along the Denpasar–Semarapura road, above the Tukad Bubuh river. This World War II heritage site is free to view and needs only a short stop. Google Maps

Gateway to the Islands & a Half-Day Route

Administratively, Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan all belong to Klungkung regency. Traditional boats leave from Tribuana Harbour in Kusamba, while most travellers take a fast boat from Sanur Port and land at Banjar Nyuh or Toya Pakeh harbour after a 30–45 minute crossing.

  • From Ubud: about 1–1.5 hours by road. From Sanur: about 1 hour. From Candidasa: about 30 minutes.
  • Half-day route: Kerta Gosa and Semarajaya Museum (1 hour) → Puputan Monument (20 minutes) → Tukad Unda (45 minutes) → Kamasan village (1 hour) → Pura Goa Lawah (45 minutes). Around 5–6 hours including lunch.
  • A car with driver costs roughly IDR 600,000–900,000 per day; a scooter IDR 70,000–120,000 per day.

Local Food & Where to Stay

  • Serombotan is Klungkung’s signature dish: blanched vegetables such as long beans, bitter gourd, bean sprouts and spinach dressed in peanut sauce mixed with spicy grated coconut. A portion usually costs IDR 10,000–25,000 and is easiest to find at warungs around Semarapura market from morning to early afternoon.
  • On the Kusamba coast you can try pindang fish and sate lilit while watching traditional salt farmers still working with wooden troughs.
  • Where to stay: Semarapura town has only a handful of small guesthouses, so most travellers base themselves in Sanur, Ubud or Candidasa and explore Klungkung on a half-day trip. Sanur makes the most sense if you are crossing to Nusa Penida the next morning.

Klungkung is best enjoyed when your base and your budget are both settled in advance. Compare hotels in Sanur, Ubud and Candidasa, then secure your stay voucher with AccessiaPass — a nett price from the start, so your travel money can go to entrance tickets, car hire and fast-boat seats to Nusa Penida.
