The items most often confiscated from travelers flying from Bali to South Korea are fresh fruit and processed meat, especially pork products, because Indonesia has reported African swine fever (ASF) since 2019. Korea's Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) repeated on 23 July 2026 that bringing in prohibited farm or livestock products without declaring them can cost a fine of up to 10 million won (about US$7,300).
Separately, Korea Customs Service sets a duty-free allowance of US$800 per person, with alcohol and tobacco counted on top. The list below draws on APQA's announcement, Segye Ilbo (24 July 2026), Etoday and Taxwatch reports on the allowance increase, and the 2026 summary on Goods Across Borders. Everything was checked on 22 October 2026.
1. Processed meat: jerky, meat floss, sausages, packaged babi guling
This is the number one seized category. For pork products from ASF-affected countries, Korean media report tiered fines: 5 million won for a first offense, 7.5 million for a second and 10 million for a third. Other meat products carry lower fines but are still confiscated. Vacuum packing or a halal label changes nothing. Beef floss (abon), dendeng jerky, packaged satay and sambal with meat pieces all fall here.
2. Fresh fruit and vegetables
Mangosteen, salak, mango and rambutan from a Bali market cannot enter without a phytosanitary certificate. During the 2025 summer holiday season alone, officers recorded 23,801 cases of agricultural products (34 tonnes) and 12,019 cases of livestock products (12 tonnes) seized and destroyed, according to Segye Ilbo. Southeast Asian routes are among those checked with detector dogs and AI-assisted X-ray. Factory-packed dried fruit is usually safer, but declare it if unsure.
3. Seeds, seedlings, bulbs, soil
Orchid seedlings from Bedugul, plant seeds or fresh turmeric root count as plant quarantine items. Indonesia's own exit rules matter too; see our piece on taking plants or seedlings home from Bali.
4. Wildlife products covered by CITES
Snake or monitor lizard leather bags, coral decorations, large seashells and turtle-shell crafts need CITES permits from both Indonesia and Korea. Without them, the item is seized at Incheon, and some are already banned from leaving Indonesia. The full explanation is in the rules on taking coral, shells or sand from Bali.
5. Jamu, slimming supplements, unlabeled medicine
Bring prescription medicine for personal use with the prescription or a doctor's letter and in reasonable amounts. Jamu and supplements without a clear ingredient list are more likely to be held, since Korean authorities regularly warn about imported diet products containing banned substances. If you don't know what is in it, leave it behind.
6. Duty-free limits: the numbers people get wrong
- General goods: US$800 per person, raised from US$600 on 6 September 2022 (Etoday, Taxwatch). Purchases at Ngurah Rai duty free count.
- Alcohol: up to 2 bottles, 2 liters in total, worth no more than US$400 combined, for travelers aged 19 and over. Some blogs say the bottle count was dropped in 2025; the 2026 Goods Across Borders summary still says 2 bottles. Go with the stricter figure.
- Cigarettes: 200 (one carton), separate from the US$800.
- Perfume: newer sources say 100 ml, older ones still say 60 ml.
Above those limits, fill in the customs declaration and use the red channel. Declaring voluntarily earns a duty reduction, while undeclared goods that are found attract duty plus an extra penalty.
What usually goes through without trouble
- Roasted Bali coffee (ground or roasted beans) in sealed packs.
- Factory-packed nuts, chips, cookies and chocolate with no meat filling.
- Endek cloth, sarongs, Celuk silver, varnished wood carvings without bark.
- Soap, massage oil and cosmetics in personal-use quantities.
Comparing countries helps if you are transiting: Japan is covered in souvenirs from Bali to Japan, and Australia, the strictest, in souvenirs from Bali to Australia. For rules while you are on the island, see our Bali rules overview.
FAQ
What if I forgot a sausage in my suitcase?
Declare it on the quarantine form or hand it to an officer before inspection. It will still be taken, but self-declaring usually avoids the fine. Fines apply when the item is found undeclared.
Can I bring kopi luwak to Korea?
Roasted, packaged coffee generally passes. Green (raw) coffee beans are a plant product that needs quarantine inspection.
Is the US$800 limit per family?
No. It is per person and cannot be pooled for one expensive item. Alcohol and tobacco allowances apply only to passengers aged 19 and over.
A habit that helps: the day before your flight, empty the souvenir bag on the hotel bed and pull out anything with meat, fresh fruit or animal parts. Leftover fruit is better eaten or given to hotel staff than thrown into a quarantine bin at Incheon.
