Murni's Warung Ubud: The Restaurant That Hangs Over the Campuhan Gorge

On the eastern side of the Campuhan bridge, a tiny warung opened in 1974 under Ni Wayan Murni — one table, two chairs, an icebox and oil lamps, because mains electricity had not arrived yet. That warung is now widely described as Ubud's first real restaurant, and it still trades on the same cliff.

Why this place matters

Long before Ubud filled up with coffee bars, Murni was the first to serve Balinese cooking alongside Western dishes for the travellers who were only beginning to arrive. The warung grew into a shop, a gallery and the nearby Murni's Houses & Spa. Walking down its stairs today feels like reading the opening chapter of Ubud's food history.

Sitting on the bottom level

The building steps down the Campuhan river gorge across four open-air floors, and the lower you go the quieter it gets. Traffic noise from the bridge gives way to running water, giant ferns and jungle canopy. The rooms are packed with Murni's own collection: old textiles, woven baskets and carved wood. Ask for a bottom-level table when you book; there are only a few and they fill up fast.

What to order and when to come

  • Menu: Indonesian and Balinese plates such as chicken satay, rendang, nasi campur and bakso, next to classic Western dishes; plenty of vegetarian options.
  • Sweets and bar: house-made cakes and ice cream, plus a lounge bar built for long afternoons.
  • Best hours: around 10.00–11.30 or after 14.00 to avoid competing for a table; late afternoon is the prettiest and the busiest.
  • How long: roughly 1–1.5 hours, easy to combine with the Campuhan Ridge Walk that starts a few minutes away on foot.

Getting there and parking

  • About 5–10 minutes by car from central Ubud (Puri Saren), or a 15-minute downhill walk.
  • Jl. Raya Campuhan is narrow and busy and car parking is very limited — a scooter is far easier, or get dropped off right by the bridge.
  • The roadside is tight and poorly lit in places; carry a small torch if you walk back after dark.
