If the Uluwatu Kecak is all about cliffs and sunsets, the Kecak at Pura Dalem Taman Kaja offers something far more intimate: a village temple courtyard north of central Ubud, stone statues lit by torchlight, and dozens of men from the Taman Kaja community chanting “cak-cak-cak” just a few metres from your seat. The evening show is performed by local residents, and ticket income helps maintain the temple.
Schedule, Duration & Tickets
- Days: every Wednesday and Saturday evening; the community’s official page lists 7:30–9:00 PM WITA.
- Duration: around 60–90 minutes.
- Tickets: roughly IDR 90,000–100,000 per person, bought at the temple entrance on the day of the show or from ticket sellers on Ubud’s streets.
- The schedule can shift during temple ceremonies or holy days, so confirm with the ticket sellers when you arrive in Ubud.
What You’ll See: From the Ramayana to the Fire Dance
- Kecak Ramayana — about half the show: the story of Rama, Sita, Rahwana and Hanoman, carried by the “cak” chorus with no gamelan instruments; all the music comes from the male performers’ voices.
- Sanghyang Jaran — the trance segment: a dancer “rides” a hobby horse made of coconut-leaf ribs and charges barefoot through burning coconut husks.
- The ring of chanters starts slowly, then the tempo builds until the atmosphere feels like a ritual.
Seating Tips, Etiquette & How It Differs from Uluwatu
- Arrive 30–45 minutes early; the audience sits on both sides of the courtyard and the front rows fill up first.
- During the fire segment, stay seated behind the barriers and don’t move closer for photos.
- Dress modestly, switch off your camera flash and never stand in the performers’ path.
- Bring small cash and mosquito repellent.
- Versus Uluwatu: the Uluwatu Kecak runs daily at sunset on a clifftop with much bigger crowds, while Taman Kaja is an evening show twice a week on a village temple scale. Don’t confuse it with the Kecak at Pura Dalem Ubud (Jalan Raya Ubud), which is performed by a different group on different days.
