At the southern edge of Denpasar, Serangan Island was once known as Bali's largest turtle trading hub. That story has been reversed: the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) turned the former trading site into a centre for conservation, education and hatchling releases. What You Will See

TCEC keeps pools of green turtles and hawksbill turtles — some rescued from fishing nets or illegal trade, others cared for until they are strong enough to return to the sea. There is also an egg hatchery area and educational boards on the turtle life cycle and the threat of plastic waste. Staff are usually happy to explain in person, and children can see the turtles up close with supervision.

The Hatchling Release Programme

The most memorable moment is releasing hatchlings onto the beach. The programme is seasonal and depends on eggs hatching — it is generally available around the nesting season of May to October. Since there is no fixed schedule, arrive in the morning and ask at the desk whether a release is happening that day.

Hours, Donation and Access

• Opening hours: generally morning to late afternoon, around 09:00–17:00 daily.
• Entry donation: roughly IDR 5,000–20,000 per person; an extra donation applies for hatchling release packages, and all of it funds conservation work.
• Access: about 20–30 minutes by car from Sanur or Kuta, crossing the Serangan bridge — the road is fine for both cars and scooters.
