The rice-field route from Kastala Dam in Bebandem to Tenganan village has no ticket booth; what you usually pay for is a guide or a tour package. Walking times published by operators range from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the route and how many stops you make (checked October 2026).
How much does it cost?
There is no entry ticket at the dam. At the end of the walk, Tenganan Pegringsingan usually asks for a voluntary donation at the village gate. If you prefer a package, Bali Travel Life (5 August 2026) reviews a Kastala-Tenganan trek with a swim at Virgin Beach on Viator from about US$41 per person, including hotel pickup, bottled water and entrance fees.
How hard is the trail?
Moderate. The route follows the paddy dykes of Subak Sengkawang, passes coconut and banana gardens, crosses a river and a bamboo bridge. The dykes get slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip and long trousers, not flip-flops. It is not a good fit for small children or anyone with knee problems.
What time should you start?
Around 07.00-08.00. The paddy sections have almost no shade and Karangasem heats up fast. Late October into November is still the transition season with more afternoon showers, so aim to finish before noon.
Do you need a guide?
Recommended. The path crosses working farmland and branches often, and none of the sources we found mention trail signs. According to Bali Holiday Secrets, local guides can be hired around Kastala Dam for a trek of a few hours; rates are not published, so agree on a price before you set off. Guides also explain how the subak shares water, the part tour reviews praise most. Experienced hikers can try it alone with a GPS track (Komoot lists a "Kastala Trekking Trail" start point), but ask permission when crossing someone's field.
How do you get to the start and back?
Kastala Dam sits on the north side of the Kastala customary village in Bebandem district, a short drive north of Candidasa. Because the walk ends in Tenganan, arrange a pickup there or ask your guide to sort transport back to your vehicle. Afterwards, take time to see gringsing weaving in Tenganan village or head on to Virgin Beach.
